The "auto adjusting" box flashes continuously on my monitor, no matter what operation is performed. I have tried re-installing the display adapter, but that didn't help. Should I try a new cable? Please help, my eyes are getting very tired of the flickering!

The message is being created by the monitor not Windows. The only thing you can do is look for the option to disable it on the monitor's menu options. NEC-brand monitors will have something call "Onscreen Notification" which you can disable. Hopefully your BenQ will have a similar option.
Think I fixed it.. My monitor kept flashing autoconfig and shaking a little, so I went to control panel - clicked on system - clicked Hardware - clicked on device manager - clicked display adapters - and updated the driver. Re-booted computer..
So far so good... Fingers Crossed..
Depends of what seems to be a problem. If you want to get rid of that message box, appearing by itself, then probably you need to take front panel PCB with buttons and replace "Auto" one, 'cause it's stuck. If you want to unlock an Auto Adjustment and other functions in your monitor, then press and hold 'Enter' button for 5 seconds.
I have a Benq that was continually auto adjusting, I used electronic cleaner spray on all the controls (a good spray) and now there is no problem, suspect the controls were sticking, especially the on/off and the auto adjust button
I'm having the same problem. Started three days ago. Really annoying. First I downloaded a driver because that was reccommended over plug and play. But that did not fix the problem. I ended up pressing the menu key (1st on left) and while holding it down I wedged a little piece of paper to hold the key down and the popup menu's have stopped. The box can be the brightness/contrast or auto/image reset/color reset ...
it doesn't matter, they all popup after pressing buttons left and right. Have no answer to correct the problem but at least I can now compute without these stupid menus.
