Question about Televison & Video

Can someone help me with my TV?

*** PLEASE READ EVERYTHING *** I recently acquired this picture tube TV from my father that was manufactured September 2004 and I have a remarkable story behind it. Let's call the first owner Billy Bob (cause I don't know the first owner's name): Billy bought the TV and used it for a couple years. Then he decided to get a house and was moving. He put the TV in the bed of his truck but forgot to close the tailgate. As he started backing the truck out, the TV fell out and landed on the top right corner of the casing. Surprisingly the TV still works and even has a nice picture! He gave it to my father and he used it for 5 years. Now I have it. The problem is the remote sensor has not worked ever since the accident. I would at least like to know why this fall caused the sensor to be non functional. I checked the circuit board and there were no cracks in it. Could this be caused by a malfunctioning micro chip?

I know the sensor on the TV is at fault. I have tried 4 remotes on it- 2 Comcast, an AT&T, and a generic GE remote. None of them have worked on the TV. I don't have the original remote for the TV. Is the remote sensor sensitive to vibrations from the TV falling?

My volt meter is reading 4.88 volts. Don't know which is pin 1 but I found 2 different connections where I got the 4.88. This should mean the sensor itself is bad correct?

Read your detailed description, and I've the opinion that everyone posts a problem with Fixya, Must see this, and understand how to place ones' problem to experts who works with Fixya. I should appreciate you.

There are two reasons for the problem you faces with this fault. The first one is with the remote control itself. as it may be very old [if it is the original remote control to this set], more than 7 years, according to you,
it must be checked for its infrared signal emission. I'll give you a link that will help you in this matter, after I've posted this solution to you. You can understand how te remote control functions, and what is the way to make it right again [if can], from that link.
Second cause will be to the infrared remote sensor, which can be located just behind the infrared sensor window at the front of the TV. It will be a three terminal component, will be diretly soldered to the circuit board. I hereby post pictures of it, for your information. The device may vary in size and shape, but will have almost the same structure.
This component can be bought from most of the electronic sparepart shops at your town. It won't cost more. see the component. Will look like somewhat brownish black in color. If the remote controls' out signals are OK, the fault will be of this remote sensor, Its system control IC sill be OK; as you see picture with proper color.
See the pictures of the remote sensors.

Check its solder terminlas first, for any loose solder joints. Check the voltage of the first pin. It should be areound 5VDC.

I have Sony tv kdl50xbr4 , had sound no picture.the tv had to turn on,off several times to have the picture!any help please

Dont know how much you like to tinker but or if you know someone. A TV has different circuit boards. One for power one for picture, one for sound, one for tuning. Power board works everything, picture board goes to to the tube, sound board connects to the speaker. Probably gettin kinda complicated all else fails have it repaired or upgrade.
Hope you find a solution that works best

My tv's picture just went kaboom! We have wonderful sound but sadly no picture. : ( Please help me turn my frown upside down! Thanks so much!

First of all I would contact the company and see if there is a recall on the set as this sounds dangerous and could burn someone's house down. If there isn't a recall I would request one be open at You may save someone's life by doing so. As for the TV it can be a number of things. If there is a recall the TV should be fixed by the manufacturer for free. If not get a quote from the local repair shop and see if it's even worth fixing or just buying a new one (OF A DIFFERENT BRAND) lol. Also please include the manufacturer and the model# next time you ask a FixYa question.

Polaroid FDM-0700A

Don't know that it's worth the money, but here's a source for a replacement inverter board (powers the fluorescent tube back light that provides 'brightness'). Manufacturer/designers of screen and back light power circuit, not Polaroid, are at fault . Screen and back light are used in equipment made by others as well, and all suffer same design deficiency :

No power

It sounds like the backlight or an inverter board on the television may have failed. Check your warranty status on the television to see if you can get it repaired by the manufacturer for free.

MicheleMc, May be too late to help you but maybe someone else is looking for the same information. Finding the manufacturers web site is difficult since their name is Eton. Anyway to get support on these excellent radios go to the Customer Support web page and from the left hand frame and click on the *Warranty Repair* or ?Non-Warranty Repair? link depending on your case. This will generate a web form you fill in and send. From past experience someone contacted me within a day or two and my repaired unit was back in a couple of weeks. The support site also has links to manual downloads, FAQs and a parts (common) listing page. Hope this helps someone and please don?t forget to rate the post.
