As you said , try upgrading your routers firmware, but the better fix would be for a n router with a n card you will have a proper synchronisation and good speed.. or else the speed will vary, for a g router and n card..

Slow internet speed when connected to router

So, If you have internet connection speed problem with your wireless try with the following steps,
1.)Reset the wireless router by using the power switch on it or by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
2.)Place the wireless router in an ideal location. The higher it is, the better, but don't put it near metal objects.
3.)Get as close as possible to the router with whatever device you're trying to connect.
4.)Keep the router and your connecting device away from other electronics. You should especially keep away from phones, fax machines and microwaves. etc.,
5.)Adjust the Wifi antenna if it has one.
6.)Change the router's channel, especially if other wireless routers are nearby.Following these steps would give you stable internet connection and also increased speed in connection. You can check your internet speed from www.ScanMySpeed.Com before and after following these steps.

Wireless speed is 60% slower than when hardwired directly . Router is only about 2 years old. Do I need to buy a new router

Hello,
This router's wired connections run at 100mbps, with little latency. Your wireless connection is susceptible to radio interference, and signal quality to how far you are from the router. If your laptop doesn't support the Xtreme G, then you won't see the wireless 108mbps, but rather only 54mbps or lower, depending on your signal quality.

The wireless G spec is now out dated and quite slow. If you have a pretty new laptop with wireless N then I recommend you get a wireless N router. The wireless signal on a wireless N router typically sees speeds of 300mbps and sometimes higher depending on the model of your laptops wireless card and the model of wireless router. You will ONLY see a speed increase if your devices support the wireless N spec. It will probably never be faster then wired connections, but wireless N does a good job of trying.

The wireless network is very slow compared to when I connect to one of the RJ45 ports in the back of the router. Every wireless connection I try crawls in speed. I have Wireless -G USB adapter in one...

Makesure your computer is not too far away from your wireless router andyou have a good signal. By placing your mouse pointer over the wirelessconnection icon, located in the bottom right corner of your taskbar, you cancheck to see if your signal strength is good. Anything less than a good signalcan cause intermittent connections.
SOLUTION:You will need to relocate your wireless router closer to your computer.

I get a better connection speed on the wireless pc then the pc connected directly to the router. Why is this.

There could be several reasons why this is, but the most common one is that the computers adapter can only handle a speed that is less than the wireless adapter card, so it would seem that the wireless connection is faster, but I need to confirm this. What is your computers manufacturer and model, and what is your laptops manufacturer and model? Or it could be that the laptops clock speed is faster than the desktops, making it seem that the hard wire is slow, when in fact it may just be the computer.

Pc connection problems

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
