As you said , try upgrading your routers firmware, but the better fix would be for a n router with a n card you will have a proper synchronisation and good speed.. or else the speed will vary, for a g router and n card..

My wifi is extremely slow on this exact Acer laptop model. I am using Windows 8 64-bit. Updated everything. Wifi is still unusually slow. Please help. (Acer Aspire Q5WPH/T6)

So, If you have internet connection speed problem with your wireless try with the following steps,
1.)Reset the wireless router by using the power switch on it or by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
2.)Place the wireless router in an ideal location. The higher it is, the better, but don't put it near metal objects.
3.)Get as close as possible to the router with whatever device you're trying to connect.
4.)Keep the router and your connecting device away from other electronics. You should especially keep away from phones, fax machines and microwaves. etc.,
5.)Adjust the Wifi antenna if it has one.
6.)Change the router's channel, especially if other wireless routers are nearby.Following these steps would give you stable internet connection and also increased speed in connection. You can check your internet speed from ScanmySpeed.Com before and after following these steps.

Wireless connection problems

If you get a 'Limited connectivity" on you wirelessconnection on your laptop, it means that the wireless card on your laptopprobably did not get an IP address from the wireless router.
To fix this problem, right click on the wireless icon on the Task bar and thenclick Repair.
This will force the wireless router to issue a IP address to the wireless cardon the laptop.

The wireless network is very slow compared to when I connect to one of the RJ45 ports in the back of the router. Every wireless connection I try crawls in speed. I have Wireless -G USB adapter in one...

Makesure your computer is not too far away from your wireless router andyou have a good signal. By placing your mouse pointer over the wirelessconnection icon, located in the bottom right corner of your taskbar, you cancheck to see if your signal strength is good. Anything less than a good signalcan cause intermittent connections.
SOLUTION:You will need to relocate your wireless router closer to your computer.

I get a better connection speed on the wireless pc then the pc connected directly to the router. Why is this.

There could be several reasons why this is, but the most common one is that the computers adapter can only handle a speed that is less than the wireless adapter card, so it would seem that the wireless connection is faster, but I need to confirm this. What is your computers manufacturer and model, and what is your laptops manufacturer and model? Or it could be that the laptops clock speed is faster than the desktops, making it seem that the hard wire is slow, when in fact it may just be the computer.

Usb upgrade

Let's see if I understand - you have added an additional card into the computer which adds USB v2 ports. Then I guess you are plugging a USB Wireless card into those ports.

Can you see the speed of the wireless connection? If you 't have an icon in the lower right hand corner for the card, hover over it with the mouse, or right click. Otherwise, go to Control Panel, Network Connection and look for the wireless card there.

Right clicking either one should show you the speed between your computer and the router.

Most wired connections will be 100 Mbps. Depending on the card and the router, wireless will be 10, 56, or 108 Mbps.

Wireless speed depends on many things, such as:
1) distance from the computer to the router
2) number of solid objects, such as walls, floors, or metal
3) possible interference from other wireless routers in the area

Do you think any of these are at work here? If you can reposition either the router or the computer, it may help.

Wireless is cool, but the best possible speeds will always come from a wired connection. I have my desktop computer wired, but my laptop wireless. When I go wireless, my speeds drop.

Tell me a bit about the equipment you're using, perhaps we can squeeze a bit more out of it.

Hope that helps!

Pc connection problems

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
