You need to change display resolution.

Follow instructions here if you have Windows XP: Windows XP: Change your monitor resolution

Here for Vista : Windows Vista – Personalisation of the Display Properties

If changing resolution does not work, that means that you have to reinstall video drivers, in this case submit a new question on fixya giving details on computer make and model.

I have a samsung 510m lcd monitor when i plug the vga cable it shows "not optimized mode 1024x768"

Your computer's video-card is outputting 1024-by-768 video,
but your monitor would prefer to receive its "native" resolution,
e.g., 1280-by-1024 or 1920-by-1280.

Change the settings on your computer's video-card.
Note that this could make the text on the screen VERY small!

Or, just ignore the message, if the "large" size of text on the screen is easier for you to read.

The monitor works but is very dark and cannot see much at all. I can just tell that it works cause i can faintly see the background

soccerstu546, The video information is being displayed.... but you just don't have any cold-cathode-fluorescent-tubes" emitting enough WHITE-LIGHT to brighten up the image and or text. If you have never used a soldering iron and solder and don't know an electrolytic cap from a mylar cap then you should look into swapping out your monitor if DELL has a cash+monitor swapout program going. They will return to you a refurbished unit that should last at least 1-2years. You should read up on the top 2 reasons LCD monitor screens GO BLACK!!! I almost guarantee you will be in the one for FAILED SMPS/INVERTER SUPPLY. You may also need to search or visit and other sites that deal with failed lcd displays. you could even try right here on fixya to get it REFURBISHED! Wow, If you saw some 8-12min vid clips on youtube you might even want to do your own disassembly of your LCD Monitior just so you can use you digital still camera to document any SWOLLEN ELECTROLYTIC FILTER CAPACITORS that are inside the monitor. Also try moving and connecting your monitor to a different PC. If same result---Then monitor is BAD. Well--anyhow bye for now. louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel

tonylad, Remove the pedestal by taking out the 4 phillips screws on the back. The back plastic cover will now be able to be pried away from the front bezel along the seam on the bottom of the monitor or sides. You may want to go to YOUTUBE to see how it's done. you need to search under LCD monitor repair or somthing similar. Yes I have seen some there that are about 8 to 12 minutes view time. If you get it apart please be very careful when handling the LCD/FPD . Next you will need to inspect the the large SWITCH-MODE-POWER-SUPPLY board. Look for any swelling of the tops of electrolytic capacitors. If you find any, mark them with a marker. With magnifying glass or a inspection microscope check the bottom of the board for thermal and or vibration FRACTURES surounding the leads of large THROUGH-HOLE components soldered on the board. Also look for any really FROSTY looking solder joints. Well, anyway good luck guy. Get back to me if you find anything out. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel @aol BYE
