Ti 84 water damage

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

My calculator TI 84 Plus doen t recognize the keys 4,5,6 when i press 4 5 and 6 noting appears thanks

Que Pasa Anabela,

Whew, it seems like a lot of people have had problems with their TI-84.

Buttons that have gone awry are pretty common issues with keypad devices. The great thing is that these issues can be solved with relative ease; at home; and at no cost. What you will have to do is perform open heart surgery on that baby. Don't get squeamish, though, it's easy and you'll soon want to pry open all sorts of things.

STEP ONE: Get a skinny screwdriver
STEP TWO: Unscrew all of the screws on the back of that screwed up device
STEP THREE: Carefully remove the face plate of your TI-84 (no, you don't have to coddle it)
STEP FOUR: Examine
4a. Check for dirty contacts (and clean)
4b. Check to see if the soft keys are off their seats
4c. Clean off any peanut-butter & jelly residue
4d. Use your wits

Okay...to wrap this up....I really do think you can fix this problem at home. I had a similar problem with my PS2 controller this week (yeah, I went circa 2004 on 'em). The R2 button wasn't working. It had to be one of two things: either the soft key was off its seat, or the wiring had gone awry. It was the former, and now that controller is running as if it never happened. The same should happen with your calculator. I seriously doubt the wiring has gone wrong because we aren't talking about a high energy/temperature appliance.

Nonetheless, damage now just is foreshadowing for failure later. If upgrading is inevitable for you then I would suggest the TI-89 Titanium. It is the best calculator I have ever known. It does have a hearty price tag, though; and the learning curve is still pretty steep too. Good luck.

My TI-84 calculator lost its cover for the batteries. Since then it sometimes can't turn on or show anything when I push the button "on". But sometimes it still can work. But because I havent...

Hi twylazhangzh,

Sound like your Ti 84 Plus is really over loaded and, can't function properly. You can fix that by installing the newest Ti 84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS. operating system.

If you have a friend that has a Ti 84 Plus or, Ti 84 Plus Silver Edition you can connect the two calculators together through the IO link ports and, they can send you a copy of their OS while you receive it on your Ti 84 Plus. Hopefully your friend will have Ti84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS on their calculator or, it might not work.

If you can't find a calculator to connect to you can connect your Ti 84 Plus to a computer that has Ti Connect software on it. If you need to connect your Ti 84 Plus to a computer just keep following my instructions below.

First, you need to download and, install Ti Connect to your computer. If you don't need any help installing Ti Connect goto Procedure 1.

If your computer's OS is XP or Mac and, you need instructions to download and, install Ti Connect click, "Install Ti Connect on my XP or Mac OS". Just follow Procedure 1 at that posting and, come back to this posting to finish downloading and, installing Ti84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS to your calculator.

If your computer's OS is Windows 7 and, you need instructions to download and, install Ti Connect click, "Install Ti Connect on my Windows 7 OS". Just follow Procedure 3 at that posting and, come back to this posting to finish downloading and, installing Ti84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS to your calculator.

Procedure 1 to installing Ti84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS

1). You can also get the latest copy of Ti84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS and, guidebook by going to the Texas Instruments web site. You can get to that site instantly by clicking, "Ti 84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS!" Once your at the Ti site click the Download Item, "Ti84 Plus family operating system". Next you can login or, click "continue as guest". I'd would click the "continue as guest". Once you have click, "continue as guest" the Ti84 Plus family operating system will download to you.

Next, click "SAVE" and then a window to a folder will pop up. It is probably a window to a folder that you download too. If so, you may want to change it and, save to this folder, "My Documents \ My TI Data \ Downloads". You can also go back and, download the Ti 84 Plus guidebook too, if needed.

Link your computer and, Ti 84 Plus calculator with the USB cable or, Direct Black Link cable that came with the Ti 84 Plus calculator. Next, drag the Ti 84 Plus 2.55v MP OS that you saved earlier in "My Documents \ My TI Data \ Downloads" out of that folder and, drop it in the "Ti Connect" icon on the desktop. Click, "Continue" when the "Erase Warning" pops up and, the new Ti 84 Plus 2.55v MP OS will begin to install.

Next, the Ti Device window should pop up and, highlight the port when found that your Ti 84 Plus is using, USB1 cable or, Direct Black COM1.

When the Ti Device Explorer finds and, highlights your calculator's information click, "Select." Then click, "Yes" when the next window shows up with your calculator's information and, the OS will continue to download. Upon completion the newest Ti 84 Plus 2.55v. MP OS will be installed.

If you run into any trouble with software or, drivers just comment to what failed at this posting and, I'll be glad to help you.

I jus bought a TI-84. when i turned it on it said RAM cleared. now there's a blinker on the screen. every time i press a button, nothing happens. whats wrong with this brad new calculator

You need to re-install or, update the Ti 84 Plus OS. Since you just bought the calculator it is unusual that it is already to that point of clearing the RAM. You can connect a computer and your Ti 84 calculator together once you downloaded and, installed Ti Connect software on the computer. That way you can use the Ti OS Downloader that comes with Ti Connect software to install the newest Ti 84 Plus OS. Or, if you have a friend that has a Ti 84 Plus or, Ti 84 Plus Silver Edition you can connect the two calculators together through the IO link ports and, they can send you a copy of their OS while you receive it on your Ti 84.

Get this problem fixed as quick as you can. You do not want your OS to fail any more than what it already has. If you can not find another calculator to connect too, then you can connect through your computer. You may have a long road ahead of you getting the Ti Connect software and, drivers working right. Just remember to come back to your posting here and, post a comment of what ever is failing. This will notify me right away and, I'll walk you though it if necessary.

How do I enter 5 and 1/8 into the calculator?

Just as your wrote it: 5 + 1 / 8

The TI-84 doesn't really work with fractions, though there are commands to convert between decimal and fractional representation.

My TI-84 Plus Silver Edition stopped working

That actually is a result of water damage. You probably need to replace it, or see about getting it taken apart and dried if the water damage was recent. DO NOT take it apart yourself. Go somewhere and ask if that is possible.
