Hi bigal13,

Based from the screen you're seeing it looks like that you're trying to play a DVD that is on a different region and is not supported by your player. Try your other DVD movies on the player and see if they work. You can unlock your DVD player so it can play other region DVDs by trying this particular procedure:

Go into the main menu

1.) Highlight "exit"
2.) Enter 2, 9, 6, 0

Now about the unit not accepting blank discs for use in recording, it's possible that you might be using the wrong type of disc for recording, try other brands of DVD-R or DVD+R or DVD+RW disc on it. See if it works.

Hope this helps!

Peace! :)

I did some further checking and for this philips model the unlock symbol can mean that the disc that you inserted is actually still open or you can still record on the disc if it still has space left. So most likely the disc you're inserting is a custom DVD that you made. If you don't close the disc out most players won't recognize the disc that you burned using this philips. You need to goto "Disk Tools" to display the Disk Tool Menu, then choose there "Finalize" icon. And it will finalize the disc.

Also your player only supports DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. Not DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD-RAM. So buy only those blank discs that have DVD+R or DVD+RW for it to work.

For more information you can check out your manual or visit this link to view it:

    Hope this helps you further.

    Peace! :)

It is a default feature of your dvd player and it must have a settings for that to unlock your device. take a look on your device manual and see if it has a configuration for this.

Trying to record to disc from VHS After recirding 8 copies, it now reads "Unknown disc, Please check disc" This is a Go-Video VR3845 Unit.

Hello,

I answered this question previously and the solution remains the same;

how long have you been using the player and has it ever accept blank DVD-R discs in the past.

The problem might be as a result of weak laser (lens) or the blank discs inserted might not be compatible with player.

When the laser(lens) of a player becomes weak, it will not be able to read blank discs. It only takes a very strong laser to read/accept blank discs. If it happens that the laser (lens) is the cause of the problem, then it means you will need to replace the laser (lens) to a brand new one to be able to read blank disc. Though the player might be playing DVD and CD, note that blank disc is stronger when it comes to reading from the laser (lens), it requires sharper laser. I hope you understand this.

So, insert a CD into the player and observe if it will play.If it plays, then its obvious that your laser is very weak.

Concerning the incompatibility issue, I hope you are aware that there are various kinds of empty DVD discs such as DVD +, DVD -, DVD RW. Try any of this empty DVD discs as one of them as to be compatible with this DVD recorder.

Amongst the two topics discussed above, one has to be the cause of the problem. So its up to you to figure out which is the cause of the problem.

I hope you understand the above....

I wish you good luck.

Hi I am trying to copy a video to dvd on this recorder What dvd disc do i use as after recording says this disc cannot play- would appreciate the exact direction how to do this Tks

The DVD-burner inside the DVDR520H is a very cheap LiteOn-burner (model: DDW451S). It would be better to replace the burner, but it would be difficult to find a product which will fit in the limited space. I'm having troubles with burning DVD's since I had bought this peace of ****. The machine have been repaired three times, but it is still not functioning properly. Shame on Philips for assembling such a weak product and their very bad support!

I just got a RH387H in Hong Kong, region 3, but the above method doesn't work, this model has slightly different icon, no "lock" icon, I tried in other similar location but no effect, hopefully someone will provide a method.

Invlaid region code

Sounds like you are trying to play a DVD of a different region to that of the player.

Worldwide region codes, sumarised:

1 - US / Canada

2 - Europe

3 - Asia

4 - Australia

5 - Africa

6 - China

You can change the region code of the DVDR520H to any region or use region 0, which makes the unit multi-region to play DVDs from any region.

  1. Go into the main menu
  2. Highlight the exit button
  3. Type 2960

This should give you access to a hidden menu form where you can change the region code.
