SOURCE: How to dismantle and re-assemble the lever

Here's the diagram:http://fish.shimano-eu.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/EV/bikecomponents/ST/EV-ST-T400-S-1970_v1_m56577569830613258.pdf The lube in them tends to dry out and harden over time and needs to be flushed out with whatever is safe for the parts (cleaner/degreaser) and then relubed with some high quality lubricant. The spray stuff doesn't stay around long enough. Ask your local bike tech what he uses.I used saxophone key oil.

SOURCE: How do I replace rear shifter cable in shifter

ok this is a little hard to explain in words but the important thing is to make sure the chain is on the biggest cog, pull the cable through the deralier tight and fasten. don't pull it too tight however. you may need to fine tune using the h/l screws but if it was in tune before then it shouldn't need too much adjustment.

You can't have end-to-end intact cable movement and NOT move the derailleur unless it is NOT tight to begin with. Look closer.

You need to figure out at which end the problem lies.

You can elevate the rear wheel (or hang the bike by the tip of the seat on a low branch) and pedaling it forward with your hand you can grab the bare exposed cable somewhere in its routing (usually along the down tube) and pull sideways on it (away from the bike) to see if the derailleur moves as expected when the cable REALLY moves. Then you can decide if the shifter is or is not controlling the cable.

Everything is replaceable as required.

or use a search engine "how to...." for videos.

Hi! is there any replacement for shimano ST-3300, 8 speed, right hand STI lever?? many thanks

There's a used pair on an eBay auction right now ending 6d 09h (Sep 21, 201101:52:54 PDT) that you might be able to snag for cheaper than a separate right lever. Wait til the last 10 seconds and bid ONCE. Leave time to confrm the bid.

There are other models, too.

My $.02: I'd take the opportunity to switch to Campi Ergo (also available on eBay). The brake lever is ONLY a brake lever so you don't have to tip toe around it when shifting and ALL CABLES are hidden.

Ive a new rear deore unit cable and housing etc. where does the cable secure in the shifter unit? I can see a small metal arch but cant figure where the end of the cable actually fixes

Not a great picture but if you follow the arched groove back from the cable-housing guide it leads to a little hole. THAT is where you stick the cut end of the cable.

http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

Accounting for physical differences, this should get you going.

Shifters don't catch and move the cable

These are among the simplest design for shifter on the market. If the cable is taut it WILL pull. Perhaps the cable is broken, grossly loose or rusted inside the housing.

If the model is incorrect look for yous at http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

Maybe start here and if you can't figure it out, take it to a Bike Shop. Ther's only so much useful mechanical advice one can remotely lend with no details.

New shifters for deore xt x7 delrailer

Shimano make an "EZ fire" which is an integrated shifter/brake lever combination and cheaper than buying seperate shifters and levers.
