If you do an illegal shut down which is power off by holding down the power switch for 8 seconds. The HP computer will then boot with the scandisk program, which will restore your hdd to perfection. Windows XP or later now use 'system restore' to rearrange registry from a previous calender date that the computer used to work perfectly.

HP G56 Notebook PC. I have been trying to reboot my laptop but the restore system is not working. I can do a system restore but not a reset to factory settings. Any ideas anyone?

A system restore is actually as per factory setting. You will or should end up with the laptop just like the first day you got it.You won't have any of your stuff on it any more though. you will lose your picture and other documents during the process. If you are thinking of a system rollback which some versions call a restore that un-installs updates and other bits that might be causing problems.

To do a factory on an hp you just press F11 during boot or select it from the boot screen if that is set to show. It then asks if this is what you want to do and wipes everything out before setting up the operating system again. You can also boot from your restore dvd. This can either be a factory provided or ones you did when you first got the system. If you have Vista you may find the boot restore and the restore disks are useless. I've had several hps with that problem happening on top of the original issues. There were defaults in the files and the only way to fix was to order a new dvd from HP.

Past these basic things you can do you may have to take it to the shop as more software/tools will be required.

My ph pavilion dv7 touch pad's light is off, what must I do to get it on again?

Looking at a picture of the laptop, it is like most HP computers. There is a button directly above the touch pad. This is your on/off button. Press it and wait a few seconds, and the light should turn blue.
