Asus crosshair II forumla motherboard not powering up

Just got the Asus Crosshair II Formula motherboard, AMD 9950 BE cpu & 8 gigs of 6400 ram. Slapped the entire setup together made sure that everything was done correctly and tried to power up the system. Inititally the system stayed on about 5 secs, and then just started cycling. Called Asus tech support and the guy I spoke to said that it sounded like a grounding issue. Told me to put electrical tape over the brass studs coming off the case and then retry. Did that and there is no significant change. Please, I need to have this system up and running before tomorrow morning, so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the comment on my system! I purchased all the parts from Newegg.com. It was not a kit, just the parts that made sense to work together. I've also used Asus boards to good advantage before, however in this case, I've pretty much ruled out all the other possibilities except that the board itself is faulty. My current motherboard will not support the 9950BE to it's fullest extent, and so I cannot test the CPU. Basically, what I'm faced with is more than likely RMAing the board back, and hoping that the next board is good.

Sounds like you have one hell of a system. Did you get it from Tiger Direct. Was it a kit. I have used Asus boards with good luck. Try taking all of the screws out except maybe a couple that hold the board in the case. Did you use the fiber washer on the studs. Take all of the memory out except one stick. (just to test) The power supplies that comes with the case are usually not enough for a system like you are builing. Is this a water cooled board. Is you cpu getting hot

Sorry this is kinda late, but I have the exact same problem. Turns out, if you have the bios version, 0502, then that will NOT support the 9950 BE processor. You will have to flash the bios to the newer version which is 1003. So I went and bough a $20 sempron 64 3400+ processor, so I can get it to boot up and then I can flash it. Now thats what I call a pain in the ***.

Hi, To troubleshoot a grounding problem like this remove the entire motherboard (keeping all the necessary connections) and lay it on a wood cutting board ( wood is a bad conductor of electricity) and try to boot up and watch it. Make sure its fairly secure so it doesnt get knocked aside, and be especially gentle and touch the board only on the edges.
This will eliminate whether it is a shorting problem.

Present the result to the MOBO support and they will probably replace the board.

I hope this helps, good luck. *s*

Hi. Asus has a great utility that lets you update your bios even in Windows.

http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=EIDxaW1Ln3YR9RA2

At the download section select your OS and in Utility section find "ASUS Update V7.14.01 Install Program" This program will automatically update your bios.

As for your Ram issue. Did you try each stick in each ram slots ? If you did and saw no issues, then I am only suspescting of incompability between your Rams.

google asus probe and install it to check your voltages and temps. also look at your task manager to see what your cpu and memory loads are. with that sort of setup, things should be running pretty good. my guess is your temp is high.

Computer won't turn on.

This sounds like an overheat problem, is your cooling fan working properly, also the processor you are using is a powerful one, so needs a cooling fan much more powerful than the lesser powered athlon 64 processors.
