SOURCE: broken starter cord lawn mower #944.368300/craftsman

Please note ! patients is required with this one !
Hi, remove the recoil top cover with the recoil attached. ( DO NOT TAKE OUT THE SPOOL OR YOU COULD HAVE THE SPRING GET YOU IN THE FACE)
Remove old cord.
With your new cord lace it through the recoil spool centre hole with a knott on the end.
now depending if the recoil winds in clockwise when spool is facing you wind the cord around it a few times by turning the spool clockwise,
Then put the cord in the notch at the side of the spool & wind the spool & cord anticlockwise about twice the number of turns of cord (this should tension the spring).
Take your end of the cord & lace it through the hole outside of the casing & fit you pull handle.
But hold the spool firmly untill the cord has a good knott on the end of it.
(Sometimes I see the guys here putting a loop in the cord to stop it sliping in while they tie a knott on the end of the handle.)

SOURCE: won't stay running

The carbeurator needs to be cleaned and probably rebuilt. Start with a spray carb cleaner by putting 3 or 4 shots in the carb. Run it for a minute then let it sit for two hours and run it again.

My push mower starts then revs and slow every 1.5 to 2 seconds. What would cause that?

It sounds like your engine is "surging". I believe that mower has the plastic carburetor that sits directly on top of the fuel tank. There is a diaphragm and gasket that go between them and if they get old and tired or get a pin hole in them, that will cause the engine to surge. If you're mechanically savvy, you can replace these parts yourself. If not, you'll need a shop to do it. The item you need can be purchased at Lowe's and retails for $2.98. It is Item# 219691. Model# 5083D. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

I have had two problems with this type of mower. The first is if the mower has gotten wet, the screw that holds the fuel bowl on has a small hole in it that can plug up. The second is that there is a line I believe from the carb to the crankcase than goes bad. Hope this helps.

I have a new 650 sears craftsman self propelled 22" lawnmower that will not start. I have gone through the prime bulb instructions, still no luck.\r\nAny ideas? Walter in Alberta Canada.

could be the priming bulb gasket between the air-filter assy. and the carb.
I have the same lawnmower and if I prime with gas from a can it will start but stop after a few seconds. When I push the bulb I can hear air leaking in this area. You can replace the gasket by removing the back half of the air-filter assembly. I am looking to buy a gasket today I let you know how it works out! Thanks Ron

Fully depress primer bulb only 3 times, then pull starter cord. Ensure air filter is clean and gas is fresh before attempting to start.

Replacement part for Craftsman 650 Briggs & Stratton 22" multi cut mower Model #917.376741

You first need to locate the model number on the mower, not the Briggs engine. Then go to searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number on the right side of the web page. This will take you to a list of parts for your mower. Your model number should be located on the deck of the mower (you didn't say if it was a rider or a push). Rider model numbers are located on the rear of the body behind, on or under the seat. Push model numbers are found on the back of the deck between where the handles attach to the frame.

Lawn mower will not start and run

Sounds like a clogged carb or a cracked primer bulb. I would install a carb rebuild kit and new primer bulb if your mower uses one.
