SOURCE: Howdy, I just acquired an air compressor,

We have a Westinghouse 3YC air compressor. The safety relief valve in the line between the two compressors started "popping off" recently. The compressor seems to be working fine. Is this a problem only with the relief valve or could there be a symptom of a more serious condition that we should be attending to? The valve is stamped 60 max which I assume is 60 psi. Is this the correct size. The tank pressure is set for125 psi. The tank relief valve is marked 250 max.

Have a old (1950's guessing) westinghouse air compressor. Pumped it to 150 psi, I shut off, air was coming out of air intake and had pressure in the crank case.

replace the non-return valve in the pipe at the tank connection
air out of intake is poor poppet/read valve seating and pressure in the sump is the tank air leaking back and down past the rings
150 psi is excessive and not good for the compressor so adjust it back to 100 -110 psi

Westinghouse 12cfu, twin cylinder air comp. >20years old. Ex service stn. Shed just rewired 3ph. Is rotation critical? No markings to be found.

rotation is critical as the big end bearings of the compressor are splash fed and the oil in the sump is picked up with a tube and forced into the bearings for lubrication. Second point the pulley spokes are angled so as to produce an air flow around the heads and cylinder to help with the cooling. Rotation arrow is normally cast into the compressor housing bearing support plate behind the pulley

I have a very old Westinghouse Air Brake 1BYC, Type Y, maybe model # 209878, air compressor. It is very slow to even pump 80 psi and then the pressure will leak completely to zero. I think wear of the...

If there is no external leakage, then air is probably slipping back past the valves. If the cylinders and rings are good, a valve change may fix it. There are still aftermarket parts available for these machines. As a rule of thumb, a rebuild with rings, gaskets, valves, and bearings usually runs about $100 per horsepower.
