I need some clarification, as you mentioned in very first comment switched from XP to VIsta: Was it working fine in XP??
Is anything gone wrong with the scanner during this period (may be felt down, or wet etc. Try to remember that and let me know)
As you mentioned in fourth comment: "Light not coming" -- are you talking about scanner Bulb or indicator??
Since upto last I figure it out the Scanner Bulb gone damage somehow, and need to replace..

If you have the installation cd of your scanner please readf on the jacket of your installation cd that wheather it supports windows vista or not .because if it not supports windows vista it will show this types of errors . for the compitable drivers for your scanner to support vista click this link and download http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=ScanJet%204890%2048Bit%204800x9600dpi%20USB%202.0%20PC/MAC&v=HP&uid=L1952AB1H&pf=1π=8&c=Printers%20%26%20Scanners&sc=Scanners&os=64-bit
.and if you have the proper drivers for your scanner which supports vista. then it could be the problem of your scanner with the white colour cable broken or got slightly loosed or the scanner bulb is faulty. take it to the repair center it would cost you near about $50 to get it repaired. but before taking it to repair please check wheather the drivers for the scanner which you r installing are supporting vista or not.
thanks. keep us all updated to help you further.

Hello,

Thank you for using fixya. The most effective way is to consult your vendor about the problem of the scanner...Its either factory defect or system compatibility.

Hi, from your problem description, this is what I assume.
Even after you tried installing the vista driver, its not working.
When you say the scanner works, I assume that the scanner head (long rod like thing) moves but without light.?
I hope you used HP scanner software to try scanning.
Well, the troubleshooting part. Since the light does not come on, can you try shining some light onto it when it scans ?
You can also try leaving the scanner cover open when it scans and see if the scanned picture is still black.
If so, then the problem might be with the hardware. In that case, you need to get it fixed by HP itself.

The light does not come on that could simply mean that the scanners 's drivers r not correct

did u install the drivers for this scanner(the drivers have to be for VISTA)

there should be o problem with the light if the scanner was not moved....

install the new rivers and ur scanner..........
the light is situated right below the assembly

It could be a random instance that when you switched, the scanner also took a dump. Can you try using it on the computer with xp and see if it still works. If it does, then we will look into a problem with the computer with Vista, if it doesn't then the scanner is done and it is cheaper to get a new one rather than have this one repaired as hp doesn't generally sell parts and I doubt you can find the part anywhere anyway.

Can you please let me know if the scanner still works with the computer with xp by hooking it up again? Like I said before, this will narrow down the problem and if is a part on the scanner that randomly went, then it will be cheaper to get a new scanner but in order to help you, I need your help by answering my question

The fluorescent bulb is not lighting because there is a connection problem in theunit or the bulb itself is burnt , and no software is going to fix it
if you just bought it I would take it back or have an electronic repair shop replace the bulb or fix the bad connection which ever one it is

the light is not working and not be cause of a software or operating system issue

it is burnt or not connecting and needs to be replaced or check for bad connection. every time the scanner scans the light should be on , but its not so something is wrong with the scanner

  • jason Oct 23, 2008

the lamp scrolls accross the bottom of the glass , so the unit will need to be taken apart

the problem will be getting another lamp , do you know where or how to get it?

  • jason Oct 23, 2008

it is possible that from it moving back and forth that the plug to it came unconnected with the light but it is still in place , but if not the scanner element(which has the lamp in it) will have to be replaced

  • jason Oct 23, 2008

these scanners are not easy to take apart , there are philip screws that hold it together and will be seen in the holes in the bottom and in the back of the scanner , disasembling the unit will take removing piece by piece untill you can finally get into the inside where the lamp is, you will have to look for all the screws that are holding it together

i will hang out to assist you when you get stuck on something , are you able to take a photo if needed , so i can see when and what youget stuck on?

  • jason Oct 23, 2008

there is a wire strip that looks like this , try and push it back in and see if that helps otherwise the wirestrip might be broke inside or the bulb is burnt

  • jason Oct 23, 2008

let me clarify , you have to take it apart!

and this is not woth a couple of dollars to me , I get a heck of alot more repairing them!

    good luck on your scanner

  • jason Oct 23, 2008

and you wouldn't be here if you new how to fix it , let alone how to take it apart!

    good bye

Check all the power and usb connection to scanner and computer , if possible try to connect the scanner to another ac mains and power it on and check .............

    Anand Kumar Oct 23, 2008

Are you getting the power on the scanner ?

  • Anand Kumar
    Anand Kumar Oct 23, 2008

IF the scanner light rod does not move then its scanner assembly failure, you need to change the scanner assembly in the scanner ,if you remove the glass plate you can access to scanner light rod , but first check if the scanner is power on , if its not on then you need to try different AC mains even this fails then power adapter is not working you need to change adapter ...IF there power in the scanner but only the scanner light does not move then its a hardware failure ....

    Good luck...

First I need to know if you can go back to the old system and see if it is still working fine. The unit may have been damaged in the move. Did you make sure to lock the scanner while moving it, and unlock it when using it? Once I have more information I can assist you further. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thanks,

have you tried downloading the latest driver from hp.com and uninstalling and reinstalling the scanner?
Can you try the scanner on an XP machine to make sure it is software related and not hardware related?
    Thanks,

If possible can you try to connect the scanner back to the XP machine so we can check if the light will come on because if the light will still not come there's a possibility that some parts of the scanner is bad or not aligbn properly, also try to install the driver for vista....

So if the light wont come on even when conencted to XP so this is not a problem with the driver , you may need to open the scanner and check the internal parts of it that may got loose.....

Will not work with Vista operation system

Correct. There is no easy solution for this issue. Several of the "older" scanners are no longer supported through the Vista operating system. Why not purchase a new multi function printer, scanner, fax and copier unit.. you will not locate vista drivers either online or from the manufacturer and without them, the scanner will not function. Alternatively, you could also roll back or re-install Windows XP operating system..

Unfortunately you have a compatibility issue. Some devices simply won't work with the way Vista is structured. The only options you have here are to replace the scanner with one that is Vista compatible, or change your operating system to windows XP, which supports your scanner.

Drivers for Vista

With the Computer.
Go to Start/programs/accessories/system Tools/Compatibility and attempt to reset the computer to the Windows mode the Scanner was made for.

Be aware however that Scanners made for use with Win 95/98/ME operate under DOS commands and 2000/XP/Vista work on the NTFS system so there is a hardware not software problem.
You will I feel wind up buying a Vista Compatible Scanner

Umax Astra 2200 scanner needing to run in Vista

Hi, The Umax Support/Download (http://www.umax.com/download/index.jsp) do not have any patch/updated drivers for your scanner compatible with Vista. If the only issue that you would downgrade your operating system back to XP is because of the canner, it may not be necessary. It is possible to dual both allowing you a choice of Vista or XP. This is better explained at (http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp). This way you will retain the use of the new features of Vista in your new computer and yet when necessary make use of your previous devices that will only run in XP. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn out or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
