Question about NEC MultiSync FE991SB 19" CRT Monitor

1 Answer

Horizontal band of Brightness

After leaving my monitor on for only a few minutes now, the entire screen will shrink down to about one pixel high and max width. This band of visibility is incredibly bright and used to be remedied by giving my monitor a swift whack to the top or either side. Now the only way to remedy it is to turn it off for about two minutes and turn it back on, giving me another 5-10 minutes of viewing pleasure. Prior to this problem, the screen would shrink maybe 100 or 200 pixels on either vertical edge, distorting or cutting off that area completely. This problem was also fixed with a solid thump. Monitor is only about 3 or 4 years old... so I wouldn't expect this to happen. My hunch is a loose wire somewhere on the inside. I've fiddled with everything I could find in the monitor menu and video card (which I've ruled out since it can be remedied by whacking) Any help would be outstanding, as I don't really feel like dropping the money on a new monitor just yet.

    I have the same problem:
-After the waranty was finished and after being on for a few minutes the top few inches of screen collapsed, and if leave it on, after a few more minutes the whole screen collapsed to a 1/8 inch horizontal line at the center of the screen.
-I resoldered the vertical output transistor (Flyback transformer driver) pins and put new heat conducting grease on its heat sink which gave a small increase in delay before collapsing.
-With a straw, I blew on the transistor and the screen came back on. I then suppose that the transistor is failing because heat is now affecting its specifications.
-This transistor is marked "K2996" and I don't know if it is its identification or some manufacturing info. If dowloaded a "UK2996" transistor specs at the sitehttp://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pd...
but it is not listed for vertical output application.

Does someone has a schematic or parts list for this monitor showing the complete or real transistor number?
And does someone have a transistor number for an equivalent that could be bought in North America?
    Thanks,
    Mag

YOU HAVE LOST THE HORIZONTAL SWEEP. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND CARE MUST BE EXERCISED AS THIS IS A SECTION WITH HIGH (LETHAL!) VOLTAGES SO IF YOU ARE NOT A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN YOU SHOULDN'T MESS WITH IT. MOST HORIZ SWEEP TROUBLES RESULT FROM FAILED HORIZONTAL OUTPUT TRANSISTOR/RELATED COMPONENTS. QUITE OFTEN SOLDER CONNECTIONS ON THIS TRANSISTOR OR THE FLYBACK TRANSISTOR ARE THE CAUSE, AND INTERNAL FAILURE OF COMPONENETS IS ALSO COMMON. A CAN OF "COMPONENT COOLER" OR OTHER SPRAY MAY BE USED TO "HIT" THE PARTS AND ALSO A HEAT GUN IN THE SAME MANNER TO ISOLAT THERMAL PROBLEMS. CAREFULL SOLDER TOUCH-UPS IN THE HORIZ. AREA ARE ALSO IN ORDER. HOPE THAT THIS HELPS. REGARDS, DAVE, SYSTEMATIC ADVANTAGE INC. 540-635-6060

Hi, I have Samsung Syncmaster 226cw monitor. When i turn it on the screen flickers then goes black. If i do this a few times it sorts itself out. During the flickering there is a high pitch buzzing...

I have the identical model with the same problem, I pulled it apart and the power supply/inverter board are one, and descovered the problem was in the inverter transformers, { 2 in all } because my monitor is 3 to 5 years old I felt replacing the whole board assembly would not justify the cost since something else could break down, I opted for a new monitor.

The vertical output IC LA7847 is failing. It will likely fail permanately and you will have just the horizontal line. The set will require service. Just do not run the set very long in this state. That thin white line can likely burn into the crt phospher and will show all the time thus ruining the glass picture tube...

I cured the problem by placing a fan in front of the screen that not only blows directly on the LCD screen, but also air underneath the screen providing circulation around the entire unit. Apparently the LCD screen is overheating causing it to "trip". I can stop the blower after about 20 minutes and there is no problem.

I will never buy another Westinghouse product again as long as I live.

I would check the cable and connector pins first. Then I would suspect there's a problem with the video signal board inside the monitor. It could be the LCD panel controls, too. That would make the unit beyond economical repair unless you got a used one.

Sounds like a possible bad pixel. I would power the machine down, reseat the graphics card, reconnect the dvi link, and reset the PRAM.

The monitor may not be able to handle the settings of the video adapter. If you boot into safe mode (tap F8 key as the computer starts), does the display appear correctly? If so, then you just need to turn down the settings (resolution, color quality, frequency) to the lowest possible settings. If the display still appears wrong, then it may be something wrong with the monitor. You can try connecting the monitor to another CPU and see if you can replicate the results.
