Trane Heat Pump model TWV036B140A1 (inside unit). The coils on the blower have started to freeze up lately which means that they have to be thawed out to allow air to pass through to the duct system.

You either have an air flow problem or your low on charge. Check filter and check to see if evap coil is dirty by taking off the metal door on the evap coil it has 5/16 screws in it is by the coil on the coil. Look inside the coil to see if its dirty you can take a flash light and shine in on one side of the coil and look at the other side to see if you can see the light if you can air is passing thru. low on charge you will have to have gauges to check this.

We have a true T49F freezer and the evaporator fans are not running. The compressor is running on startup. The coils are cold. But are freezing up. Shouldn't the fan be on, or does the cabinet have to...

Freezers have a sensor that is referred to as a "Fan Delay/Defrost Terminator". It senses the temp during the defrost cycle. Usually, when the evap temp reaches about 50 degrees, there should not be any frost or ice on it. This device terminates the defrost cycle. It also keeps the fans off so warm air is not circulated. When the evap gets to about 20 degress or so, the sensor switches on the evap fans. If the fans are not coming on, either the sensor is bad or the evap is not reaching the proper temp to cause the sensor to turn on the fans.

Hope is helps to clear up some things and point you in a direction as to what might be going on.

Have a 2 year old SAMSUNG RS2545SH Side by Side

Control board has gone bad....

What happens is the defrost is controlled electronically from a circuit board, when this goes bad, the freezer quits defrosting, and freezes the fans that circulate air through the fridge side of things.

To check this, unplug the entire fridge, leave the freezer open, wait for it to defrost a bit, if this causes the fridge to start cooling again when you plug it back in, then its the defrost. You should also see ice crystals on the back of the freezer just under the icemaker.
