Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

1 Answer

Image or Ghost my pc

I have had a major lifestyle change and I need to "clean" my computer. I don\'t want any remnants of **** on my computer and I am not savvy enough to completely remove all that **** from my acer computer. there are 3 profiles on my computer. one is the one my father set up one is mine and one is a guest account. I want administrative rights on my account. I need to clean the memory of **** from my computer.

However I have documents for school and things that I would like to keep like all of my music. how do I back up these files and "wipe clean" the rest.

I also have no money for downloads or for products.

  • tinamariek Oct 23, 2008

Thank you so much! This has been a real Godsend. I have three questions though.

1 What is an ethernet? Is it a what is plugged into the back of my old desk tower type of pc? Does it look like a phone jack/wire?

2 Where can I double check that I have all drivers? You said I could use "this link" (in the second paragraph after step 8)

3 Where would my Acer model # be?

Thank you again. I will post again after I have finished going through all of these steps.

If you have been watching pron on your computer you probably have viruses. That stuff destroys computers and I don’t know how many times ive had to reinstall windows on my friends computer because of that… Every one of my friends that I do that for I tell them… Ill do it for free this time but next time ill charge you cause im not your mommy that has to clean up after you… If your computer runs perfect… just delete everything, uninstall all programs you don’t want and defragment your computer. Run a virus scan… download adaware free and run the program. And be on your way… If your laptop runs like **** which it probably does watching porn on it… read the following.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND! This process deletes ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! Including any programs you might have installed like adobe, or Microsoft suite. So don’t be surprised when you reinstall windows and there are no programs on your computer… Just FYI before you do this. I would not recommend you try this unless you are some what tech savy. If you are not go find some geek to reinstall windows and im sure they will do it for a cheap price. But please don’t go to geek squad… they rip people off… you would be better off buying a new laptop then dealing with those guys…

1st. take everything you want to keep and put it on a cd. If it wont fit on a cd put it on multiple cds. This is the only way your going to safely transfer your files. Be careful about what you take cause viruses like to interweave them selves to other files some times… So only take what is important.

2nd download a version of windows vista installation off of limewire or ares or any file sharing network. At this point you wont have to worry about viruses since your about to wipe your computer. You don’t need to worry about piracy as you have your own vista serial number that should be located on the bottom of the laptop on the authenticity sticker.

3rd. Print these directions out because once you do the wipe you may not be able to access this again until the process is complete.

4th. Put the vista installation on a cd. Make sure it is not compressed.

5th. Place the cd in your cd player on your laptop. You might get a screen that asks you if you would like to repair windows or do a fresh install. If you do that is a good thing. Do the fresh install. If this does not happen, restart your computer with the cd in the drive. When you see the acer logo come up, depending on your system you wil have to hit 1 of the following buttons. (F2, F8, or F10, or F12 or delete). Anyways, you are looking for the boot menu. In the boot menu you will find an option to boot from a cd or disk. Click that option. (try each F button until you find this menu. You may have to restart a couple times if you don’t get it the first time.)

6th once the process starts it is pretty self explanatory. MAKE SURE! That you delete any partitions that are left on your laptop. Some viruses can partition a hard drive and hide there so that your system can not see it. You will see what im talking about. Now select the hard drive and install windows. Now you wait and answer and questions during the install.

7th. Now that was the easy part. The hard part is getting all of the drivers installed back onto your computer so that everything works properly. What you will need to do is connect your laptop with an Ethernet as your wireless no longer works until you install the driver for it. Basically every piece of hardware that is installed on your computer need a driver to work correctly… example: bios, chipset, wireless adapter, video, sound, etc…. pretty much everything. SO!!! This process is very important and must be done correctly.

8th. Go to the ACER website. They have a downloads and support section… Go there and look for drivers and downloads. You should be able to look up what computer you have and it will list out all the drivers you need. Download these drivers in order from top to bottom. Hopefully, they are smart enough to put them in order that they should be installed. Download the first then install. Download the second then install… If any of the installs asks you to restart do just that.

There you go. After that is all done your computer will probably run better than it did when you bought it. SO NO MORE PORN!

Just incase acers website does not give you the drivers you need this link will provide you with all of the specs on your computer. This way you know exactly what drivers you are looking for. In the case that your comp is different im sure you will know… but the rest is pulled by spec of your system. Hope this helps and good luck. This process should take 30 min to 2 hours depending on your level of expertise.

also, if you use mozilla firefox as a browser instead of internet explorer you wont get viruses quiet so much. it has a spam / virus / adaware / spyware blocker. it is awesome. so use it and dont click on anything dumb.

I was assuming that this was your note book. This was in the title.

go here for a list of the drivers your computer recommends... You may not need all of them... if you dont have a camera or wtvr you wont need the driver for it and that goes for the rest of them... if you are not sure what you have or if you need it... install it anyways... it wont hurt anything.

yes the ethernet looks like a phone cord but its bigger. you need to use that instead of wiresless since the wireless needs a driver.

once all the windows install is complete go to the website and install the recommended drivers on the website for your model. Im assuming its the Aspire 3680?

I can't turn start the computer the screen is just black

Has the computer been dropped, jarred, etc. Are you getting a "ghost image" on the screen in a bright light? With little info, it could be backlighting, lose connection, monitor, ribbon cable, etc.

Troubleshooting screen inverter and backlight on acer 5738

You are right! the inverter is the likely problem, unfortuneately unless you have another screen there is no reliable way of testing, the inverter puts out at least 1000 volts and don't attempt to check with a meter it will probably get damaged.

Watch the screen at an angle during boot (image content varies) to see if you can detect any changes of a 'ghost' image. If so, then the video section is working OK but then the backlight has been disturbed and disabled. You may have bumped a connector that connects the main board to the display section.
If you cannot find anything suspicious with the connectors, either the backlight itself or the inverter board has failed; I checked but could not determine if the screen has LED backlighting so it will be a fluorescent and inverter combination. The high voltage inverter is often on a separate, very narrow board since these are mostly out-sourced from another company; TDK is a major player in the manufacture of these inverters and they are generally available and can be found on eBay.

Painfully slow dell mini netbook

A slow Dell Mini computer can be caused by many many reasons such as outdated hardware, overload start up programs, corrupt registry issues, too many junks, virus attack, poor security software taking too much system resources, remnants of uninstalled applications etc. The fact is, you should keep some system maintenance job regularly. If you don't want to do the job manually, try the Dell speed up solution available here: http://www.speedupslowdell.com/dell-pc-tune-up.html

The fault is a back light problem, it could be the power connection to the inverter, because you can see a dim video image.
If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. A ghost image can be used on only one computer the same image cannot be replicated on other machines. Create a different image for the other computers and then burn the image file to the DVD drive for future use.

I want to change the HD from 40Gb to one with more capacity but I tried to make a ghost image in a 120GB and 160GB HD but the bios don't recognize it and only can see in the screen a simbol _ flashing.

Not sure which software you are using for making the ghost image. Lets say its "Acronis".
First, you will need an USB hard disk drive to store the image on.
Next, run the boot cd and choose backup.
Send it to the hdd.
If it was successful, remove / replace your hdd.
Run the boot cd again but now choose "Restore". Locate your image and then wait.

Hope this helps you. Norton Ghost is a bit different.

hi,
yea you may, but make sure that you have already created a *Ghost* image of your current setup.

All you need is a bootable CD with some utilities which will help you out.

Try "hiren's Magic Disk 9.5" : it is bootable disk with proper menus and lots of utilities to make you king of your system.

This disk is usually used by System professionals (including me) :)

Instructions:
1. Boot your system with this magic disk
2. Goto Clone Disk option (Ghost disk)
3. Choose Best compression version
4. utility will start Symantec Ghost which will ask you for the source partition and destination partition for making images.
5. proceed with proper answers.
6. once the ghost imaging is complete, store this ghost image in your external storage drive
7. again boot your system with this magic disk
8. goto Partition utilties
9. Select Acronis Partition manager
10. You'll love to use this software for hard disk maintanence.

kuldeep

Ibm thinkpad T40 Hard Drive change out

After fdisk and format you need to ensure that operative system is installed into yor hard drive. Using ghost you restore the image disk by booting from ghost image CD if you made a bootable image disk. Ensure Bios is set up to boot from CD.
If you used Norton Ghost ensure you captured the image of full bootable original hard disk drive for same computer. If it does not boot after restoring ghosted image, than the image it is probably not complete. If hard disk image is not good, easiest thing to do is using Windows install CD to installl again operative system, then you eventually restore ghost image.
