A common problem in the Sony camcorders is a stuck iris assy, the part of the lens assembly that regulates the light coming into the camera. It sounds like that is the problem with your camcorder. It can be verified by zooming your lens out and it and shining a light into the lens to see it you can actually see the CCD at the back of the lens. It helps if you know what you're looking for, but if all you see is black, then the iris is stuck closed and you will need a qualified tech to look at the unit.
