Elna tavaro won't stitch

My 40 yr old elna was sewing just fine last night, now it won't make a stitch and something seems to be rubbing too tight in the bobbin area..can anyone help? I'm working like crazy on costumes for Saturday night!

Thank you ehmbee...I did clean everything out, and I WAS sewing fuzzy material. I will have to take it in to get serviced. Luckily, I found a dealer right down the street. I was trying to sew costumes for this Saturday's halloween party ( a week early, what's up with that?), but looks like it's not going to happen.

    Thanks for your time,

    Linda

Sounds like either some thread jammed in the bobbin area, or possibly it got knocked out of "time"-as you know a sewing machine is just that-a well tuned machine that has movements that have to occur in sequence. Were you sewing anything heavier than normal? I have knocked my Janome out of "time" twice by sewing something too heavy for the needle or the machine in general. I have also had thread wad up under the bobbin. Re-alignment or whatever they call it is not real expensive but would result in some downtime for your machine.

My Elna 1100 stitch selector(zig zag ect)is not moving can only use straight stitch

If your machine is an older mechanical model, it is possibly seizing due to old oil that has dried. The stitch selector may be frozen.

My Elna usually won't start sewing unless I first give the wheel a push. That lasts for awhile, then I end up having to give the wheel another push. Local repair shop has no solution. Any advice?

Is your machine an older mechanical model (not computerized)? Can you hear the motor straining to begin stitching? Has it been considerable time since the last time it was professionally serviced? If yes, it's very possible your machine is seizing due to old oil that has dried.

I would like to know what stitch number to put my sewing machine onto to stitch stretch material. I have a Elna 40 sewing machine regards Judy

Looks like stitch #06 might be a stretch stitch. You could probably also use a slight 08 or 09 zig-zag. Unless you are sewing something really stretchy (lycra) IMHO, a slight zig-zag is fine and actually is a lot faster than a stretch stitch which takes a few stitches forward and then one or two stitches in reverse. The stitch #09 is something that I use frequently for stretch fabrics.

I have looked but can't see a manual, but looks like push button stitch selection on front of machine, often it will be same as straight stitch, but need to take stitch width from 0 to 4

Elna tavaro

If you are in USA, then talk to White Sewing Center, they are the Swiss Tavaro made machine specialists.

There are some parts listed for sale on sewingpartsonline.com Elna Star 62 SU Parts but I can't see the top tension knob listed. Haven't actually pulled one of these apart but I have had a go at several other repairs, I would suggest that you start by joining the Yahoo Group called Elna Heirlooms, you need a yahoo profile, then find the Groups page and search for this group, you will need to request membership from the moderator. Once you are a member, you can search the various subject threads, one of the members will have covered this repair for sure. The members are really great and share their love of these great Swiss made machines.

I have a old old elna Stella 27 and it's a beauty but I am having problems with the lower thread tangling until it is a thickish mass around the outer side of the place the bobbin goes, but then sometimes...

Hi! Congratulations on your old Elna! I just love old sewing machines; they are so solid and reliable.

(Unless of course you're getting a big bird's nest with the bobbin thread, right? That's so frustrating!)

With my old machines, I've found that a tiny bit of thread caught in the bobbin assembly can cause these nasty tangles. I use a bright flashlight and a pair of tweezers and just keep looking until I find it. While you're in there, clean out any old lint or gunk (meaning, old oil) you find. Brush all the lint out. I use a q-tip moistened with a bit of WD-40 to clean the gunk (but be careful that the fuzz from the q-tip doesn't come off while you're cleaning). With the WD-40, you have to be very careful not to get any of it on the surface of the machine--it can mess up some of those beautiful old finishes.

So clean the bobbin area, make sure you're threading the bobbin correctly, and lastly, if you hold the tails of the top and bobbin threads snugly in your left hand behind the needle while you take the first few stitches, the birds' nests should be a thing of the past.

Let me know if this works, ok?

Happy Sewing!

Elna Carina Zig'Zag Stitch Issue

Over time, and especially when not used, there is a likelihood of dust and old oil forming a sort of glue, or clag....

Remove the needle for safety, then, when you have the setting on Zig zag, gently push the needle arm to the opposite side of the zig stitch.......release the needle arm, and if it springs back quickly, it is fine, if it moves slowly, or almost not at all, then the clag needs removing with application of few drops of methylated spirit to start, at the sort of piston affair that shifts needle arm L & R .....move the needle arm back & forth until it frees up, a drop of oil to finish.........if almost seized, may require leaving overnight after using a penetrating lubricant if it is really resistant....I have had them on the bench for 3 days with manual manipulation a few times each day before they finally come good.
