Question about Goodman Heating & Cooling

I have a goodman heatpump a when i turn the thermostat on heat the electric elements works but not the compressor i check with a volt meter and i have 240 volts at the contacter 24 volts at the defrost board on the condensor .the red wire is hot .question'the white wire from the t-stat being energize from the board or the t- stat

Why won't the compressor run


This can be for a variety of reasons. It ranges from something as simple as no supply power (blown fuse, open breaker, faulty contactor, or run capacitor) or it could be more serious as a grounded or open winding in the compressor motor. My suggestion to any novice and or person without proper tools and knowledge; First check the low voltage (24 volt control voltage) by turning on the "Fan on" switch located on the thermostat to on, not "Auto" The blower fan should come on, indicating there's 120 volt and 24 volt available. Fan doesn't come on is an indication that there's no control power. The next step would be to check for power at the transformer and fuse located in the air handler. There should be 240 volts feeding the transformer, and 24 volts coming out. The control voltage is needed to operate the thermostat (which is the switch that sends the 24 volt signal to the compressor contactor to turn the compressor on/off. This 24 volt also powers other relays and switches in the system. knowing that 24 volt is available also tells you that the problem is most likely in the condensing unit (outside, where the compressor is located). At the condensing unit you should check for 240 volt supply power. Upon finding 240 volt supply power the question now becomes whether or not the thermostat is calling for anything (cool or heat if the unit is a heat pump). There should be 24-30 volt available at the small gauge wires feeding the contactor coil. While having the thermostat set at a temperature lower than the current room temperature (in the cooling mode) the thermostat should send a 24 volt signal to close the compressor contactor and turn it on. The non-metallic end of a screwdriver can be used to depress the moveable part of the contactor. After pushing in the contactor, should the compressor start then you may only need a new contactor. It may just hum because of a faulty run capacitor or grounded or shorted internal motor windings (grounded or shorted windings are usually indicated by tripped circuit breaker and/or blown fuse). It's a good idea to have a good multi-meter and knowledge of use before attempting any repairs or diagnosis on your own. I recommend some basic knowledge of electricity before even thinking about attempting any repairs or diagnosis.

Refrig circuit breaker


It needs to be determined wether it's a dead short or the compressor is bad. A dead short is when the hot (colored) wire is in contact with the neutral (white) wire in a 120 V system.
I would get to the compressor connection box and disconnect the power from the compressor and turn the circuit breaker on. If it trips, it's a wiring problem. If it doesn't trip, the compressor is shorted internally.
As an alternate test to disconnect the compressor, you can turn the thermostat to off and reset the breaker, if it trips, then it's a wiring problem, if it doesn't trip and as soon as you turn the thermostat to on, then you must go to disconnecting the compressor and check it again with the compressor disconnected.
Other tests, an electrical meter is required.

Heating elements not energizing on Goodman AFUE 60 air handler


FIRST i would use a multi meter and check elements for power. one or more may not be working. SECOND iwould check sequenser . also look for burnt wires at element and throughout. probably sequensor they are usually under 20 dollars. the wires on very bottom of sequensor should have 24 volts when heat is on.

Goodman package unit heat strips will not turn on


Put meter probes at in put terminal of the element if you read 220volts that mean your relay is good. if you got it there use amp meter on one leg of that element. You should read some amp draw there but if there is no amp draw it mean the element broke.

I JUST BOUGHT THIS UNIT IT HAS THE OUTSIDE UNIT AND THE INSIDE UNIT AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE HEAT PACKS IN THE INSIDE HANDLER IS FOR EMERGENCY HEAT ONLY...IS THIS TRUE?


Yes, if you are talking about a heat pump. It you have an electric furnace inside, the electric elements are for emergency heat. Otherwise, unless you switch it manually at the thermostat, the heatpump (outdoor unit) will run all year around. If you want to use your inside heater (electric heater) just switch your thermostat to "emergency heat" and it will turn on the electrical elements instead of the outdoor unit. This way will make your elec. bill higher tho. The heat pump is much more efficient. Hope this helps you , have good day

My kenmore electric dryer is not heating I checked the heating coil and it seems ok could it be one of the thermostats?


Kenmore style dryer - no heat problems:
Electric dryers - See the "how to take apart" section first if needed. Always check the power supply first...if one house fuse blows or 1/2 of the breaker trips, it is possible for the dryer to run with no heat. If you have a volt meter, you should read 240 volts between the red and black wires, 120 volts between the white and black and 120 volts between white and red, check for this at the main power connection. If you have 240 volts to the dryer, remove rear access panel, turn dryer on and test for 240 volts to the *heating element wire connections (#4). If you have 240 volts there and no heat = bad element, the element must be broken physically to be bad. If you have no power at the heating element, remove power, remove wires to the heating element and isolate them so that they can't touch anything. Reinstall power and check each wire for power from the wire to the dryer cabinet, one wire will probably show 120 volts and the other will show zero. Make note of the color or # of the wire that has no power, remove power to the dryer and check the wiring diagram that comes with the dryer to find out where that color or # wire goes to. EG: - wires might be yellow and red, if the yellow wire (example only) was the one that had no power, look at the wiring diagram to find out where that goes to and check only those parts, no need to check the other colored wire parts as they are working. Things to check are, *thermostats, timer contacts, selector switch, motor switch heat contacts ( 1&2 on the motor switch ) and *thermal fuse. If the wires to the heating element are the same color, just remove power after test and slowly follow that wire that has no power with your hand to see what parts it goes to. If live volt testing scares you, try the ohm checkinstead.
*#1-Thermal fuse that controls heat. If the dryer overheats, this fuse will blow. One shot fuse. Does not reset.
#2-Canister for the heater element.
#3-Hi limit thermostat. This thermostat is a safety thermostat in case the dryer severely overheats. When this safety thermostat is defective, it should raise a red flag for air flow problems.
#4-This is the terminals of the heater element that is inside the canister.
#5-Thermal fuse that controls motor run.
#6-Control thermostat. This is the thermostat that controls the cycling of the heater in high heat mode.
#7-Heater for low heat. When you select low heat, 110V is sent to this heater that the control thermostat sits in. The heater helps cycle the control thermostat faster, therefore you get less heat than the high heat mode.Things that could stop a electric dryer from heating:
- house fuse or breaker ( needs two of them ), heating element, burnt wire, thermostat(s), thermal fuse ( not all models ), motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, burnt power cord/plug.

Control wires come from the thermostat to power the contactor coil. At the thermostat the red wire must power (switch) the yellow wire to make the contactor pull in to run the outside unit, Check power with a ac volt meter between the red wire and the yellow wire, with the heat/cool switch turned to off. If you do not have 24 volts ac, your wire may have an open from the thermostat to the outside unit, your transformer may be bad and not supplying power, or your contactor coil may be open

Heatpump A/C not working


First,Turn on the heat cycle (Not Emergency)and see if the outside unit come on,If not,and you don't have low voltage outside,Go to the inside unit and test the transformer,If you have low voltage from the transformer but not outside,It is the low voltage wires,If you don't have low voltage from the transformer,It's the transformer.If you have low voltage outside when in heat mode,but the unit won't come on,It's the contactor.Let me know if you need more help.

Goodman heatpump. Crazy pressure in heat mode


Check the TXV valve on the outdoor unit, it could be stuck closed. We have been experiencing the same problems with the 410 systems and the TXV was the culprit. Good Luck

We recently bought a new house (to us). It has a Goodman heat pump and Goodman Electric backup furnace(A36-15) with a Janitrol stat. I switched the stat to emrg. Heat when the temp got below...


If you have a volt meter, check to see if you have 24 volts coming from the thermostat on the yellow wire.

If you do, and it is set on emer heat, you have a bad T-stat.


It looks like it is wired properly.

If you have no meter, you could try changing the stat, I reccomend Honeywell or white rodgers.

Let me know if you eliminate the Tstat as the problem and we can go from there.
Chances are its the stat.
