I have a 96 ranger and the ignition chime never shuts off. The only way to make it stop is to pull fuse #25 which is gem system and speedometer. What could the problem be? I'm thinking replacing the ignition or should there be engine codes that come up and if so can it be done with an obdII comp or do I need a live dyno done?

I suggest you obtain a wiring diagram and understand the circuit before you begin to fault-find or check the exact operation or function in the vehicle handbook.

If a single chime is used for ignition, door and lights there could be a control box...

There are no codes for this. The issue may be that the gem is getting a driver door open signal or the gem itself is bad. I got a used gem at a salvage yard for $20 recently, but make sure its not the door switch first. You can pull the connector off the switch and use an ohmmeter to see if the wire is grounded. If it is, trace it to the gem to find where it is getting cut into.

SOURCE: I have residual current draw on 1996 Ford

When checking a draw you have to wait to check till all modules have powered down including Gem module. This can take up to 30 min. Specs are 50 ma draw. To check get you a test light take off the postitive cable, " you can also use a meter", now you have to put the light in series withe the battery and cable. Clamp one side of test light to battery cable the other side to battery post WITH CABLE OFF THE WHOLE TIME. Now if you open doors turn any switches you will have to restart your 30min. then you can check and see if unplugging module, if that fixed problem. what we do is open the doors before, then take a screw driver and close the door latch so that you can get in and out of the car without turning something on

If the chime includes the cab light staying on as well:
There is a door switch in both the driver and passenger side doors that needs attention. I too had this problem. Solution: squirt wd40 onto the switch located near the door latch on both driver and passenger side.

Navigator Door Chime goes off when car off and I open the door. Radio system stays on & interior lights go off when door shuts.

All this comes from the GEM module,You will need to repair the driver door lamp switch located in the door lock assemble.

Battery has about 1/4 amp drain with everything off. Pulling fuse #25 (Speedometer and GEM system) brings the drain down to the normal 0.05 amp level. Problem is frequent but intermittant. Auto mechanics...

You're right - nothing to do with the alternator. Question is, why would those accessories be active with the ignition switch OFF? Perhaps some problem with fuses being active that shouldn't be when the ignition is off.

All windows will not work on my 2005 ford taurus

2002 taurus. don't have 2005. Sorry.

Could be your GEM module. Call your dealer and ask if your 2005 has GEM module. It's expensive so be sure it is problem first.

Dealer can test with NGS tool.

CAUTION: Once the new module is installed, it is necessary to download the module configuration information from the diagnostic tool equipment into the new module. For additional information, refer to Section 418-01 .

Principles of Operation
The generic electronic module (GEM) constantly monitors its subsystems for concerns. If a concern is found in one of the subsystems, the GEM will record the concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
The ignition switch position is very important to the GEM functionality. Erratic or unexpected GEM functions can often be traced to problems with these ignition GEM inputs.
The GEM controls a variety of systems:
  • windshield wipers
  • courtesy lamps
  • warning chimes
  • keyless entry
  • interior and exterior lamps
  • power windows
  • parking brake actuator warning chime
Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart Electrical
  • Central junction box (CJB) fuse 216 (15A)
  • Damaged wiring harness
  • Loose or corroded connector(s)
  • Circuitry
  • Generic electronic module (GEM)
