PS3 DOLBY DIGITAL ISSUES

When I put a game into my PS3, it plays the game in dolby digital automatically. I put a blu ray movie in and all I'm getting is Pro Logic. I've messed around with my settings but can't figure it out. What am I missing?

In the PS3 menu, open Settings > Video Settings > BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) or (Optical Digital) depending on which one you are using. Set the type to to Bitstream (Linear PCM does not send the DD stream through).

I am assuming that you are hooked up to an amplifier via a optical cable.

My guess for the Blu ray problem is, if you have an older amplifier that doesn't support the new digital HD sound codecs such as DOLBY DIGITAL HD and DTS HD, your amplifier will revert back to stereo or Pro Logic depending on how your amplifier is set up.

As for the Dolby Digital part, as you said, it does it automatically. Most games have Dolby Digital set up as the default audio output and the only real way to change that should be in the game itself. There are very few games that I have found that support anything other than Dolby Digital.

I hope that helps.

Having Blu ray issues, not sure if the blu ray games work (don't think we have any) but regular games and digital movies work just fine just not blu ray. We bought a extended warrenty with it, but

Sounds like the Blue Laser may have gone bad. Try swapping out the internal blu ray drive with another one. You will have to take it apart and of course that would void the warranty unless you can make it look like the sticker on the bottom wasn't tampered with. On second thought if it's still under warranty just send it in and get your money's worth! ; )

We hooked it up and have no sound

From the Console Settings screen in the System area of the Xbox Dashboard, you can configure the video output of your Xbox 360 console for a widescreen, high-definition TV, determine your audio options, and check your console's serial number and Xbox Dashboard version.
Go to correct section for ... Audio

Change your audio output settings for games from this screen. These audio settings do not affect DVD movie playback. For DVD audio settings, refer to an individual DVD movie's setup screen.

Settings consist of:

  • Analog Output Settings: choose Mono to merge the left and right audio signals so that you can hear all sound through a connection to a monaural TV or monitor; choose Dolby Pro Logic II to listen in normal stereo (no audio surround receiver required) or to listen to Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Pro Logic II soundtracks from compatible games or other media.

Dolby Pro Logic consists of four channels of audio: front left/center/right and a monaural surround channel that is mirrored in each of your rear left/right speakers. Dolby Pro Logic II uses digital signal processing to generate 5.0 audio (front left/center/right, rear left/right) from any stereo (left/right) programming, whether from movies, music, or games. Unlike movies and music, however, games are specially encoded with Dolby Pro Logic II decoding in mind.

To listen in either Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, you must connect your cable's left/right (white/red) RCA connectors to a compatible surround receiver. For more information, see our connection page for the cable you're using:
  • Digital Output Settings: configure this setting only if you'll be using the Toslink optical digital-audio output from a compatible Xbox 360 AV cable (optical digital-audio cable sold separately):

The default digital-audio setting is Dolby Digital 5.1. If this is your preference, you do not have to make a selection from this screen.

My PS3 has no sound when game starts. It does have sound before game. Also, the Blu-Ray movies skip & dont play.

It sounds like the sound signal type might be incorrect. I'd go into sound settings in the options menu, and when it asks whether you want manual or automatic, choose manual. Tell it to send regular PCM audio instead of the default Dolby settings, and see if this fixes your issues.

Surround sound on ps3

Most digital inputs are assignable, so go to set-up menu on your receiver and make sure the optical port (opt1 , opt2, etc.) is assigned to the input (vcr, aux, etc.) that you want switch to to listen to the PS3. You may also need to go into the PS3 settings menu and turn the optical to output the Dolby Digital signal. You have to do this with most DVD players, too.

Different Audio output between DVD and Blu-Ray DVD

The issue is that not all videos use DTS. Look at the videos that you are trying to play do they support DTS if so make sure that you are selecting the DTS track in the audio setup.

In regards to your receiver if it does not support Dolby Digital then you might want to look at upgrading to a receiver that supports Dolby Digital and DTS if you want true surround on all your videos.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].

Can't get 5.1 audio from bose surround system using PS3 blueray

Yes but first thing, the blu-ray disc you are playing must be 5.1 to get true 5.1. If it is an older movie/TV show, then it might be only 2 channel audio. If this is the case, then your Bose system needs to create simulated 5.1 surround sound, which is not true 5.1. However, if your blu-ray disc is a true 5.1, then your PS3 needs to be set to output 5.1. I am not familiar with the PS3 so I am not sure where to located that setting. Also, try other blu-ray discs.

First of all, Linear PCM is the best option to choose. PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is a format for uncompressed raw audio data.

Some 5.1 sets have Dolby ProLogic II for example. The raw PCM output gets spread at your speakers dynamically. Meaning the decoder of your set interprets it the way it thinks is best. For example, if it gets a high frequency tone, it sends it to the center speakers as for human voice has a very high frequency. The center speaker is meant for dialogs.

But when you choose a compressed, encoded format such as Dolby or DTS the channel devidance is already mixed for you for optimal theatre experience.

When you choose DTS or Dolby in the menu of your Blu-ray Disc it will originally output a raw PCM audio stream. The decoder knows how to decode the DTS data out of it when you use the DTS audio track from the movie. The same goes for Dolby. Some movies can output pure PCM, but then most sets use ProLogic II to devide it over the speakers.
It's kinda hard to explain how it works, bottom line is.. there's nothing wrong.

I hope it makes sense to you and your question is answered.

Greetings,

DarkNeogen.

NO SURROUND SOUND WHEN PLAYING BLU-RAY

Your amplifier should "downgrade" the signal to 5.1, even if the disc isn't using it. It is most likely a setting on your amp that may need adjusting for "types" of digital to accept on its input. If you can, set your optical input on your amp to "auto". This way it will automatically detect and switch for the proper incoming audio feed
