My washer just started doing this as well. It is 18 months old.

  • Nancy Wolfenbarger Nov 08, 2008

My washer is also only 18 months old and has to be started 3 or 4 times to get it to wash. Otherwise the F1 code keeps coming on, the beeper goes off constantly. Happens again when about 15 min's left in cycle. Repair places in town will not touch it and say it will be extremely costly and that Magtag is out of business!!!! Any suggestions for help?

  • kafkaedge Nov 09, 2008

mine is the same, 18 months old and I have to start it 4 times, then when there is 21 minutes left it beeps...I can't do a load of laundry without this happening....help!!!!!

  • Anonymous Jan 03, 2009

Mine too. It takes 2-3 times to get it to start

  • pitpuppy101 Jan 19, 2009

Mine just started doing this same thing, it keeps going to an F1 Error code. When I start it up, it goes to an F1 Error. Then I will Stop & Restart several times and then it will work. I am also experiencing this part way in the cycle. Luckly mine is under warranty with the company I bought it from. I will let you know if they say they can fix it and tell you how they can. Otherwise they will have to replace mine.

  • ricotexas Feb 19, 2009

ditto, three trys and it starts up, then stops at the 21 min. mark. I haven't called for a fix yet, hoping it's nothing to serious

  • Kona11 May 25, 2009

Code F1 at startup and then at 21 minutes when it starts a filling action. 18 months old and out of warranty. Just started doing it.

Well, you're not gonna like this, but here's the deal.

Remove the three screws on the rear of the control panel and lift it up. Disconnect the rubber hose on the right side of the gray control module and blow through it to make sure it is clear and not kinked. If this check is fine then your control module needs replaced.

Note that Maytag knows this is a fairly common problem. My washer failed 9 months out of warranty with this problem.

The only good news is that it is an easy, though expensive, replacement.

I called today with this issue and was told there is no known problem, which is funny when I see page after page of people complaining about my same issue. The part alone starts at $200 or better. To get someone out is another $140. By the time its said and done, you might as well go buy another new one...and wait for the 3 year mark and do it all over again. Bag that. Ill find me a better washer..and hopefully better customer service. I didnt care for the guy who flat out called me a liar.

My Maytag MTW6500 T failed after 2.5 years. The error code displayed is F1. I ran diagnostics and error code 68 and 72 showed up.

To fix do the following:

Call Whirlpool at 800-688-9900.

Let them know you have a Bravos or Oasis washer and you are getting a F1 error code.

They will send someone out to replace the controller board for free!

Replacement board number is W10189966

You may have a different number in your maching, I had a W10130544. The W10189966 is the current replacement for your board!

You're awesome - I just called and did exactly what you said, and they're sending a service person out to replace the controller board for free. Thanks for posting this!

4-18-2011 Call Maytag about the F1 code on my bravos MTW6500 and basically told it will cost me $. Like at least 300. Got the washer in 2009. What a joke!

  • Matrix1960 Apr 22, 2011

Just called the 800 number above regarding the F1 code on my Maytag Bravos MTW6600TQ0 washer. Service technical will be out next week to fix the problem at no charge.

  • ashleysdeals Jun 01, 2011

We bought ours in 2007 and at 16 months this was the problem. and it wouldn't reset after unplugging it any more and we would have to start and re start 8-12 times eventually....We did this for nearly 3 years because we were not wanting to pay money because the warranty barely expired and I didn't want to give them the satisfaction of more money out of our pocket. Well we are fed up and tired of laundry to be taking sooo long to do and we saw that others had it fixed for free...so we made the call (before we knew it was free) and sure enough they are coming tomorrow to fix it free of charge...parts and labor FREE!! 6-01-2011 That is so exciting so I say call them again and make them do it FREE! By golly it's not our fault they messed up when making them!

  • Frankiefan Jul 29, 2011

I made the call on 07/28/2011, they could not have been more helpful. I have an appointment scheduled in A.M., with NO CHARGE to me :0) Recommend anyone else having this problem, make the call...800-688-9900.

I have a Bravos washer giving error code 51. After reading this, I called the number and was told that while they do this repair for free on some models, of course mine is not one of them. I have called a repairman and am waiting for him to come. since either ther rotor position sensor or the lower harness has to be replaced, I'm expecting $$$.

  • Doug Nov 16, 2011

    Thanks for the Info.
I also called the above Maytag phone number, and they are sending a service person to repair the washer with F1 error code for free.

I'm also suffering from the F1 problem and have now had 2 extremely frustrating conversations with Whirlpool. They claim that the model number of my washer indicates that it is almost 4 years old (which is true), and apparently they believe that this is an acceptable lifespan for an appliance that cost almost $700. They 'offered' a repair service that would cover this part (the control board) and warranty the machine for one additional year for about $350. Then I called their parts supplier and learned that to have that board shipped to me total cost would be $250. I am disinclined to sink more money into a product that even the manufacturer won't stand behind, and will start my search for a new washer TODAY. And I am launching a full-on smear campaign against Maytag/Whirlpool for their 'customer service' policy that really doesn't serve anyone at all except themselves.

If this were a wear and tear part like a rubber gasket, I would understand that eventually it would need replaced. But this is an electronic component, unable to be affected by user error (and I have followed instructions to the letter with this machine since the day I bought it, regular cleaning, only HE detergent, etc.). I do not accept the answer that less than 4 years is the expected and acceptable life of an expensive household appliance.

When I moved into my house 4 years ago, there was a 20-year-old washer and dryer already here. They actually worked, but I wanted something more high-tech, so I made the mistake of donating them to a charity and buying the Bravos. I will not be making that mistake again, I will not be supporting a company that does not stand behind their products.

Also, the customer service supervisor did let on that OTHER model numbers of the Bravos did indeed have a free control board replacement covered...but not mine. Clearly it's the same problem afflicting the others...why would a reasonable company not expand coverage and stand behind their product? He also refused to transfer me to their legal department to discuss the class action suit that obviously needs to be brought against them.

For those of you still reading and experiencing this problem, you can hit "cancel" and the "start" button again and it will start refilling. You may have to do it a few times depending on how advanced the problem is. Mine started with one Cancel/Start cycle. Now i'm up to (no joke) TEN. I have to babysit my washer, as if I don't already have a full-time job. Also happens again at the end of the cycle when the tub drains then attempts to refill.

Whirlpool needs to do the right thing and back up their products, and admit when the electronics are defective.

Thanks Gregory. Still having not done anything to fix my situation that I posted about 3 LONG months ago, I called the number you provided today. That number apparently is customer support for front-loading washers. She documented my case and transferred me (after a 10+ minute hold time, I guess what I get for calling on a Monday morning!) to the customer support line that supports top-loaders. That number is 1-800-253-1301. Basically I was told (again) that "we're sorry, but this problem doesn't seem to be affecting your model/serial #". Oh. Clearly, I'm making it up. :( So I escalated to the customer svc manager and had to go through the same BS, the end result of which was finally her agreeing to give me a 50% discount on the part ordered directly through them. She gave me the name of 3 service companies (whom I will have to pay to come out here and assess the problem, then again to replace the faulty board). She said I need to make sure they give me the correct part #, since they do not accept returns on parts. I think I'm going to take the **** thing apart myself, give her the part #, make sure their discount is cheaper than getting it on Amazon, order it, and install it myself. I should really know better than to call them and expect any help, it's a great way to ruin a Monday morning and start the day frustrated.

  • Nancy Sep 14, 2012

AdJennifer, I am having the same problem with my Bravos Model # MTW6600TQ0, top loading fancy dancy expensive washer. In fact, as I right this my washing is beeping and I have been running up stairs every few minutes to pause and then restart, There are others on different appliance boards with the same problems we are having and if they won't fix for free, I think we should start a class action suit. There is obviously a problem with the control board in our top loading washers as well as the front loading. I don't think we should be discriminatred against because we chose the top loading version! I had an extended warranty, believe it just went out recently (Already had to have the whole tub and wheel bearings? replaced when it was only a few months old. It started the stop and beep thing a while ago, probably while still in warranty but it only happened occasionally, now it is constant. It is taking me hours to get this load done, I might have to empty out the clothes. I will try to run it/ rinse it out without clothes just to be sure it is not a clogged tube issue. But I believe it is the control board because it is happening at end of cycle too. When I first bought this machine about 4-5 years ago, I decided to get the best quality, Maytag, and since it is a long term investment, I would go for the eco-friendly, low water use HE washer, despite financially needing a less expensive washing machine. I was looking for the long haul and thought it was worth it to spend more for a washing machine. After all, my Hotpoint washer lasted me from 1985 to about 2007 , 22 years! Perhaps we should all rebel against corporate greed and planned obsolescence and go back to wash boards or wash our clothes in the bathtub.

  • Mark Montague Jan 30, 2013

I also have this issue with the F1 code on my Maytag Bravos washer purchased in 2007. Model Number is MTW6600TQ0. Just called the customer service number above 800-688-9900, told them I was reading about some recalls on some models. I had registered my appliace so they had my information. She stated that Maytag/Whirlpool would take care of the service call and part as a gesture of good will.

  • MaryS Sep 10, 2013

I called both Whirlpool and Maytag about the F1 error. Both told me the board would be no charge but I would have to pay service and labor. The service company they scheduled told it it would cost at least $160. I am unemployed right now and don't have $160. So basically they sold me a defective washer and I will have to pay an additional $160 to fix their defective washer. I am totally fed up with whirlpool! It isn't fair. I aske if I could just have the replacement board sent to me and they refused because they said it had to be installed by a licensed techninian. So because I don't have more money to spend fixing their defect I stuck with a defective product. I'm wondering if I should contact the Att.. Generals office or the BBB

  • MaryS Sep 30, 2013

Filed a complaint with the BBB and now Whirlpool is sending someone out to fix my washer. Thank you BBB, I've never done that before but it was worth it

Hi - I know this is a very old discussion, but the problem remains very real for Maytag (and apparently Whirlpool) owners. We have owned a Maytag Bravos washer for several years and only recently started having this F1 error problem.

After looking around the internet a good bit, I found the part and video relevant to making this repair (see below) BUT I also found another Maytag number that I called first. I played dumb saying I thought the machine might be part of a recall. A very nice woman with Maytag took all my information (model, serial, name, address, etc.) before ever really telling me anything but then said there is no recall but there is a program by which Maytag is "helping" on this issue. Yes, I asked whether "helping" means free repair, which it does. They are sending someone out tomorrow to take care of it.

So - the relevant information:
The number I called - 866-769-7260

If for some reason you do have to go the repair route, I think I found the appropriate control board for $150 (lowest price I found) at Amazon: http://amzn.com/B005B5RXL8

And the video showing the very easy replacement process is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oFPRNYpSy4&

Good luck to anyone out there still having this problem!

Thank you for this very helpful video. Naturally, Maytag will not stand behind their products. So I ordered the part from Amazon and used the video to replace the part. It took 10minutes max. The washer is running great. I do have a problem with the buttons but I understand this is another part. The user interface? If you can direct me to the part and video for replacement Im willing to give it a try. Thanks for being such a great person and telling people what they need.

From the Maytag website not sure if it will solve the issue completely:

For BravosTM washers, check the following answers for error-code related issues you can correct:

The following list of codes indicates a possible electronics communication problem with the washer:
BravosTM washer - F1, F2, F40, F41, F42, F50, F51, F52, F53, F54, F72
To remove the error display, press Power/Cancel or Pause/Cancel twice.
maytag bravos top load washer error code F1 - hcz_003_web_env1.gif
If Power/Cancel or Pause/Cancel does not work:

  1. Unplug washer or disconnect power for one minute.
  2. Plug in washer or reconnect power.
  3. Re-select the cycle and press Start/Pause.
NOTE: If the error remains on the display, call for service.

To get over the F1 Code problem with the Maytag top load washing machine: press pause/cancel, open lid, dump about half a gallon of water into the machine, close lid and press start. It has been working for me all the time. I have to do this at the beginning of the wash cycle and at the beginning of the rinse cycle. What a pain!

You will have to get the circuit board replaced to fix this. Mine went in less than a year they tried just resetting it that lasted one whole load. These machines are junk for the price dryer didn't even make it through 3 loads before it went out and of course the part was back ordered so was without a new dryer for months. Never again next time going for them pretty red LGs.

I bought my Maytag Bravo on sale and really got a great deal. Then I got it home and one the FIRST LOAD got the infamous F:01 error. ON THE FIRST LOAD. My solution....I hauled that thing right back to the store for a full refund. Not even worth my time. I saw on another website that even if Maytag replaces the part for free you still have to pay for them to send someone out and replace it for you. I did take the top panel off and try the "easy fix" and I know I could do the replacement myself, but if it's messed up right out of the box I'm not going to waste my time and effort.

We have the same problem with our washer, Maytag/Bravos. It's only 3 years old and started doing the F1 routine about 6-8 months ago. After a disappointing call with Maytag, they said there have been 'no software problems' with the appliance. They also scheduled an appointment with a local service provider, which we'll have to pay for. Total bummer. Tried to do the right thing by buying an energy efficient washer from a trusted brand and it's total ****. Not buying Maytag again.

  • Laura Bruckner Apr 03, 2013

I called the 866-769-7260 number; they said "No recall but we'd like to send someone out to fix that error code for you". Works for me and I will buy a Maytag/Whirlpool appliance again! More than I can say for Toyota Corporation who is dogging me on an issue being recalled on trucks one year newer and above but not mine with the same engine! My washer is the top loader and was purchased in Feb. 2008 from a Scratch and Dent place.

  • Laura Bruckner Jul 11, 2013

Update - July 10, 2013. Now the washer is throwing everything off balance and showing the UL code. It shakes so much that I now see all the dispenser cups on top of the wash tub have deep gouges in them, going to try calling Maytag again, I will post their response.

I AM ALSO EXPERIENCING THE F1 & UL CODES. I START WASHING IN THE MORNING AND BY THE TIME I GO TO BED I AM STILL ON THE SAME LOAD. BY THAT TIME I OPEN THE WASHER THEN FIGHT WITH IT AGAIN THE NEXT DAY. THIS IS SOOOOOO AGGREVATING & USING UNNECESSARY ELECTRICITY. MORE SO IT RUINS YOUR DAY KNOWING YOU HAVE TO FIGHT WITH THIS ISSUE EVERYDAY. I HAVE BEEN ON HOLD WITH MAYTAG AND I AM STILL HOLDING. I AM GOING TO REPORT THIS TO THE BBB. I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE DOES AS WELL. MAYBE WE WILL GET THIS RESOLVED IF WE ALL REPORT.

    Maytag Bravos error code f1

F1 is a very bad error unfortunately. Try unplugging the unit 60 seconds to see if it will reset the control board. If not, then you will need a new relay control board which is about $200, because F1 means that the board has detected an internal short inside the control board itself.

My Maytag Bravo washer starts, then stops and displays a F1 code. I turn it off and restart it several times before getting beyond this. What's the solution?

The solution is easy. Remove the screws in the back and find the pressure tubing from tub to the control. Remove it and blow through that tubing to get the sand and sediment out of their. Re attach the tubing and retry. I have more:

The f1 code on the Maytag Bravos top loading washer keeps going off and stopping the machine

Please contact Maytag to inquire about the code F1. They should check the system and that that code is a courtesy repair and should be scheduled for a someone to come out to fix it. FREE
It is possible that the F1 code was caused by your laundry habits (detergent), but I think that is unlikely. Too many of these machines have problems with the F1 error code. There is a known problem with the Oasis / Cabrio / Bravos machines.

The F! error code keeps coming up when I start my washer

F1 means communication error, the best thing to do is unplug unit for 2 mins and try again
