Question about Washing Machines
When trying to wash clothes the washer will kick off with error code F1 after restarting 2 or 3 times it will then work
Well, you're not gonna like this, but here's the deal.
Remove the three screws on the rear of the control panel and lift it up. Disconnect the rubber hose on the right side of the gray control module and blow through it to make sure it is clear and not kinked. If this check is fine then your control module needs replaced.
Note that Maytag knows this is a fairly common problem. My washer failed 9 months out of warranty with this problem.
The only good news is that it is an easy, though expensive, replacement.

My Maytag MTW6500 T failed after 2.5 years. The error code displayed is F1. I ran diagnostics and error code 68 and 72 showed up.
To fix do the following:
Call Whirlpool at 800-688-9900.
Let them know you have a Bravos or Oasis washer and you are getting a F1 error code.
They will send someone out to replace the controller board for free!
Replacement board number is W10189966
You may have a different number in your maching, I had a W10130544. The W10189966 is the current replacement for your board!

I'm also suffering from the F1 problem and have now had 2 extremely frustrating conversations with Whirlpool. They claim that the model number of my washer indicates that it is almost 4 years old (which is true), and apparently they believe that this is an acceptable lifespan for an appliance that cost almost $700. They 'offered' a repair service that would cover this part (the control board) and warranty the machine for one additional year for about $350. Then I called their parts supplier and learned that to have that board shipped to me total cost would be $250. I am disinclined to sink more money into a product that even the manufacturer won't stand behind, and will start my search for a new washer TODAY. And I am launching a full-on smear campaign against Maytag/Whirlpool for their 'customer service' policy that really doesn't serve anyone at all except themselves.
If this were a wear and tear part like a rubber gasket, I would understand that eventually it would need replaced. But this is an electronic component, unable to be affected by user error (and I have followed instructions to the letter with this machine since the day I bought it, regular cleaning, only HE detergent, etc.). I do not accept the answer that less than 4 years is the expected and acceptable life of an expensive household appliance.
When I moved into my house 4 years ago, there was a 20-year-old washer and dryer already here. They actually worked, but I wanted something more high-tech, so I made the mistake of donating them to a charity and buying the Bravos. I will not be making that mistake again, I will not be supporting a company that does not stand behind their products.
Also, the customer service supervisor did let on that OTHER model numbers of the Bravos did indeed have a free control board replacement covered...but not mine. Clearly it's the same problem afflicting the others...why would a reasonable company not expand coverage and stand behind their product? He also refused to transfer me to their legal department to discuss the class action suit that obviously needs to be brought against them.
For those of you still reading and experiencing this problem, you can hit "cancel" and the "start" button again and it will start refilling. You may have to do it a few times depending on how advanced the problem is. Mine started with one Cancel/Start cycle. Now i'm up to (no joke) TEN. I have to babysit my washer, as if I don't already have a full-time job. Also happens again at the end of the cycle when the tub drains then attempts to refill.
Whirlpool needs to do the right thing and back up their products, and admit when the electronics are defective.

Hi - I know this is a very old discussion, but the problem remains very real for Maytag (and apparently Whirlpool) owners. We have owned a Maytag Bravos washer for several years and only recently started having this F1 error problem.
After looking around the internet a good bit, I found the part and video relevant to making this repair (see below) BUT I also found another Maytag number that I called first. I played dumb saying I thought the machine might be part of a recall. A very nice woman with Maytag took all my information (model, serial, name, address, etc.) before ever really telling me anything but then said there is no recall but there is a program by which Maytag is "helping" on this issue. Yes, I asked whether "helping" means free repair, which it does. They are sending someone out tomorrow to take care of it.
So - the relevant information:
The number I called - 866-769-7260
If for some reason you do have to go the repair route, I think I found the appropriate control board for $150 (lowest price I found) at Amazon: http://amzn.com/B005B5RXL8
And the video showing the very easy replacement process is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oFPRNYpSy4&
Good luck to anyone out there still having this problem!

From the Maytag website not sure if it will solve the issue completely:
For BravosTM washers, check the following answers for error-code related issues you can correct:
The following list of codes indicates a possible electronics communication problem with the washer:
BravosTM washer - F1, F2, F40, F41, F42, F50, F51, F52, F53, F54, F72
To remove the error display, press Power/Cancel or Pause/Cancel twice.
If Power/Cancel or Pause/Cancel does not work:

To damonawsgt : i started reading this because the kenmore elite that i gave my daughter is having this F51 problem the funny thing is (well not so funny) the reason i gave it to her is that i bought that pretty red LG set you mentioned and right now as i'm writting this that pretty red washer is going and it is so loud when it spins it sounds as though a jet is taking off. i literally can't hear my tv over it and i'm not in a small house, my house is 4500 sq ft the laundry room is far on the other side of the house from me, it is **** !!!! if you have one piece of clothing to much nothing gets clean. save your money !

To get over the F1 Code problem with the Maytag top load washing machine: press pause/cancel, open lid, dump about half a gallon of water into the machine, close lid and press start. It has been working for me all the time. I have to do this at the beginning of the wash cycle and at the beginning of the rinse cycle. What a pain!

You will have to get the circuit board replaced to fix this. Mine went in less than a year they tried just resetting it that lasted one whole load. These machines are junk for the price dryer didn't even make it through 3 loads before it went out and of course the part was back ordered so was without a new dryer for months. Never again next time going for them pretty red LGs.

I bought my Maytag Bravo on sale and really got a great deal. Then I got it home and one the FIRST LOAD got the infamous F:01 error. ON THE FIRST LOAD. My solution....I hauled that thing right back to the store for a full refund. Not even worth my time. I saw on another website that even if Maytag replaces the part for free you still have to pay for them to send someone out and replace it for you. I did take the top panel off and try the "easy fix" and I know I could do the replacement myself, but if it's messed up right out of the box I'm not going to waste my time and effort.
