I have one machine that shows no connection, and on the switch the activity light is flashing on and off, not as with normal activity, but longer intervals. Any ideas?

If the activity indicator is flashing very fast or it's on solid then move the cable on the hub/switch to a different port. If the activity light goes out then you have a bad port on the hub/switch. If the symptoms don't change then reload the NIC drivers / replace the NIC. Sometimes a network interface will go bad and just start sending out random data onto the network (called "chattering"). Another symptom of a chattering NIC is almost constant collisions if you are using a hub to connect your PCs. A collision occurs when two or more devices transmit on a shared Ethernet line at the same time.

Please can you send me detailed instructions on how to use a kingston usb memory stick

The memory stick becomes another drive, when plugged into the USB port. Some sticks have a write protect, which is a teeny tiny switch. If the switch is in the protect position, you can read but not write any data to the drive. Often the drive will be listed after all of your camera card ports.
To view the drive press and hold the Windows key and press the letter E. and then release both. The available drives should show up there.

Some of the ports are flashing. some are not

Typically non flashing port lights means that there is nothing connected to those ports and no communication is happening. data movement and communication fires off the lights.

Our hp 2650 when boots up all the grn and org lights continually stay flashing what could be wrong, although 1 port doesn't flash and works

It could be a Failure on those Flashing Ports, try to console in to the Switch and access the event log to verify that. try the troubleshooting part of the manual at this link, see if it helps: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/Mgmt-Oct2005-59906023-AppC.pdf

Lost connection between switch and hub - LED flashes every 5 secs

You say you have the same problem when you connect the cable directly from router to laptop, so it apparently is not a hub problem. That leaves the router and the cable. You're fortunate in having a working system on the other port. Why not try swapping pieces to see which is the failed piece? For example, what if you swap the ports for the cables? If it's a router problem, then the "bad" cable should work when in the other port. What if you swap cables? That would reveal a bad cable. Finally, swapping computers would show a computer configuration problem, such as the connection not being set to automatic.

3com 3300 TM - all Ethernet port not working, power led flashing

A blinking power LED means that the switch is either downloading software, or is initializing which also includes running the Power On Self Test. You may have firmware issues with the switch and/or the switch is stuck in initialization mode. You may have to contact 3com regarding a warranty issue. Hope this helps. Good luck.
