If you replaced the battery with a new one and it is not holding a charge, then your charging system is not putting out enough power to run the mower AND recharge the battery. So you need to figure what is wrong in the charging system.
It may show a full charge but when you go to turn the engine over it's draining the charge and there's not enough of cranking amps to keep it turning over. I would suggest installing at least a 350 cranking amps. This will not hurt the engine but it will give more power to turn the engine over to start. A lot of cheaper batteries are only 200-275 amps but don't last long.
It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.
there is no alternator on small engines it is called a stater which is usually on the coil all one unit with coil but does the battery charge on a battery charger the battery might be bad & wont take a charge let me know if i can further help thanks wade
the battery probably got over charge & shorted the cells the tractor should charge the battery as it runs if it was equiped with electric start the battery charger more than likely over charged it killing the battery
Your battery is junk. Replace it. Lead/acid batteries lose about 1% of their charge per day, so in 90 days of non-charging they are basically discharged. This is a bad thing. When winter comes, put a smart trickle charger on it, or at least once a month put a non-smart trickle charger on it for a couple hours or an afternoon so you keep it charged up. I love/hate batteries.
