Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FS980 Notebook

1 Answer

My Sony Vaio VGN-FS980 (Windows XP) is running really slow.

This laptop takes way longer than it should to even get the itself running, and once it's on, it's so slow you would think there were fifteen scans going on. I use Microsoft Security Essentials as an antivirus, which scans once a week (I used to have AVG, but got rid of it, and I'm glad, because MSE has actually detected problems and resolved them). In addition to running slow, it just does weird things, like my open pages will vanish out of my toolbar (although I can access them through Ctrl-shift-Esc) and then randomly reappear. Also, some icons that should be on the left side of my toolbar disappear and only occasionally show up. I've defragged, updated drivers, downloaded Windows service packs, rebooted numerous times, even in safe mode, and I don't know what else to try. Do I just have to back up and completely restore my computer? Can someone help?

Ran a full computer scan with the MSE and found a Trojan virus. Got that taken care of, and as of now, things are working ok.

The Sony Vaio slow issue can be caused by reasons like lack of free disk space, registry corruption or redundancy, overload startup programs, virus attack, fragmented hard drive etc.

There are manual ways to get all those issues fixed but it costs time and energy, and most importantly it needs technical skills. So I'll recommend a quick yet easy speed up solution, as you can see here: http://www.sonyvaioslow.com/

SOURCE: Sony Vaio VGN-FS980 is slow

Aside from hardware many things can slow up your PC:

  • If the C: drive is too full Windows is unable to allocate a proper virtual memory cache on the drive.
  • Your chosen anti-virus solution can even slow certain machines down (post what your running)
  • A high % of the time it is spyware/malware related
Just to make sure the machine is completely malware free you should download and run this program.

SOURCE: Can't restore factory intallations and settings: Vaio VGN-FE880E

Are you doing DESTRUCTIVE recoveries or are you doing NONDESTRUCTIVE recoveries? Try another hard drive in the machine and recover to that. Nondestructive recoveries replace the operating system without destroying the personal data. Its possible the original problem is propagating over to the recovered systems. Do a destructive recovery. Understand any data not backed up will be destroyed. Possible the original problem was a trojan virus.

SOURCE: Laptop that shuts down.

It appears that the battery is not being charged. It may be a faulty battery, but is more likely to be a bad charger unit.

Sony Vaio VGN A-690 no battery detected

Yeah. If when you take out the A/C adapter, the laptop goes off immediately, even though you have bought a new battery, then it's definitely some hardware issue with the laptop itself. I'd say just live with it as it wouldn't be worth getting fixed (cheaper to get a new laptop).

If it can run on battery fine, it's just that windows indicates that the battery is not detected, then it could be a software issue. But given it's the same in Windows 7 as with XP, this could be BIOS related. Perhaps try flashing the BIOS?
