Modem speed slow, reboot modem speeds it up

DSL download speed through modem gets very slow. If I reboot modem, it speeds up for a while. Rebooting computer, deleting cookies & temporary internet files makes no difference. Why does rebooting modem speeed up my download speed, and what can I do to correct it? DSL is QWEST 1500 / 768 kbs, Actiontec GT701R modem, Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Nothing else uses DSL line except landline phone.

I have the same problem. I have 3Mb with Qwest on an Actiontec M1000. After about 24 hours the speed goes down to 300-600k. If I reboot the modem...it goes back to 2600K. Switched to Actiontec GT701...same problem. I have been on the phone for > 3 hours with Qwest tech. Nobody can figure out the problem.

I have the same issue with a Netgear router. No issues with the modem at all but every few days the speed drops off from about 5Mb to 1Mb. Switch it off for 30 seconds and back on and it maintains the speed 5mb for another few days. Weird. I think it's the phone company systems resetting the modem but thats just a guess. My brother lives across the road and has the same problem with a Belkin modem.

Does it feel hot to the touch? Is it dusty? Do you have it sitting where it can get air circulation around it? If it is getting air and isn't dusty the unit might be getting glitchy. They can do that before they go out sometimes. It may need to be replaced. However you may also have a problem with the connection itself on the other end (the provider's end). If you don't have a static ip address most ISP's will assign a different ip address if/when the modem is rebooted sometimes, but they can also keep the same ip address for a long time dispite rebooting. (when you unplug and start it again it is rebooting). You might want to check with your provider and see if they can change it to see if that helps. Sometimes it's their end that is glitchy...

Att dsl is slow and getting only 340kbs download avg instead of 3 megs?

I would call your Internet Service Provider tech support for your DSL and try to solve the issue. It may not be the hardware issue.

check what speed your service provider is giving you for downloading.
do this by going to www.DSL.com. or one of the other places that check you download and upload speeds.

Slow downloading

the porblem seems to be at your ISP.
you need to check with your ISP and verify wha is your upload and downlaod speed. most of the time you should have 5Mb upload and 10Mb download as min.
the speed you are seeing is more like a dialup 133Kb.

Slow modem

An option that you can take is to possibly update the firmware of your modem. If that does not work contact your internet provider for a replacement depending on the arrangement you have. (Whether or not the modem is in rental or purchase plan) if its under warranty have it replaced.

Yes, this can be a problem with the modem that you have first thing that you need to do here is to reset the modem and reconfigure it back, but if after that still have the same problem better contact your ISP and ask them if everything is working from their end...
