SOURCE: Blackout

Try lowering your brightness setting below 55.Its hard to see at just the right angle. The monitor has a failsafe installed for over voltage use of the bulbs for the screen. The lights go out but your screen is still there.

For Jimmy- HP's website is a nightmare but I'm sure the user guide can be had there; it will just take time to locate it.

For Rosignoli- you won't get much help without telling us what kind of computer (Apple - Wintel) the model, operating sytem, etc.
This isn't the psychic hotline.

If you need a general course in computer use, many local schools and libraries offer beginner's courses, mostly at very low cost or free of charge.

I have a HP vs17e monitor and for last 2 days it will only stay on for about 3 seconds then go black the blue power light is one and no blinking. any ideas what is going on?

It can be the power supply, backlight inverter circuits, bad lamp assemblies.
If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed HP monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Monitor hpvs17e stays on for second and goes blank

gldngrlz411, most likely problem with internal "switch-mode-power-supply" / CCFL inverter supply that provides 600 to 1000 volts ac to light the CCFL tubes that provide "white light" so you can see what is on the glass LCD panel!! Explore here first: http://www/lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ If vs17e does same when connected to a different "known good" pc, then you will need to make big decision!!! FIX or Trade in for new wide screen unit. 12fixlouie

Common failure in this monitor is the poor soldering works on the doughnut (4) shape inductors in the inverter board, http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/

use the economical approach replace the ac power supply if this doesnt work replace your monitor with a new one.
Because its probably the same amount of cost to fix it as it is to get a new monitor.
