Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Slow modem DSL download speed gets very slow. If I reboot modem, speed returns to normal for a while. Then I have to reboote modem again. Resterting cmoputer, deleting temporary internet files & cookies doesn't make any difference. Only rebooting modem speeeds things up.

I just got dsl high speed internet from att on 1/14/09. Everything was superfast as i saw download speeds of up to 600 plus KB/s at download.com and a lot of other places. Streaming videos was ultra smooth , no it needs to stop and rebuffer.  About a week ago it has really gotten slow. When I first got dsl i took an online speedtests at a few sites. They were all similar  at 1.5 mb/s plus, now they're still all similar, except it's a lot slower!  like 470 kbps or somethin close. The max download speed i've seen recently is 55 kb/s! I'm currently paying att for download speed 6.0 mb/s and 768 kbps upload

An option that you can take is to possibly update the firmware of your modem. If that does not work contact your internet provider for a replacement depending on the arrangement you have. (Whether or not the modem is in rental or purchase plan) if its under warranty have it replaced.

Netflex loads but turns off man;y time during a movie,

Most cases of this type of situation are due to the ISP's service speed. You cannot expect to stream high definition video on a lower-speed DSL service or even on base-level cable modem service. It may work okay in off-peak hours, but when there is heavier bandwidth demands, freezing and buffering becomes a common issue. Unless you have about 3Mbps download speed, you can expect performance issues.

I can not connect to the Internet. I have WiFi connection but can't do anything else

Plug your computer/laptop directly into router. Can you get to the Internet then?
If you CANNOT get to the internet when your computer is plugged into the router, reboot your router. If it doesn't have a power switch, unplug it. Leave it unplugged. Next, you need to figure out if you have another modem for DSL or Cable. If you do have another DSL or Cable modem, unplug that device to. After 5 minutes has elapsed for both devices being unpowered, plug in the DSL or Cable modem to the power source. Keep the router unplugged from power. After your DSL or Cable modem has powered up for 5 minutes, plug your router into the power source. Wait a few minutes. Reboot your computer/laptop. Try the wireless connection again.
If you CAN get to the internet when your computer is plugged into the router. Reboot your computer. Try to connect again. If you cannot connect after rebooting, make sure you are connecting to YOUR OWN wireless access point and not someone else's.
Do you have other computers/laptops/wifi devices that CAN/CANNOT connect to your wireless / access the Internet?

Im only recieving 1020 speed download, when should be atlwast 8

First, if you are connecting to the router with wireless, there are a couple of possible problems. If you are using Wireless B, you'll probably only get around 4 or 5 mbps at best, and even with wireless G, if you happen to have your router set to the same channel as your neighbor or several of your neighbors, it will slow down a LOT and could even have trouble staying connected. To check this, try plugging directly into your router and disabling the wireless on your computer temporarily and run this test again. If it is much better, try changing your wireless channel.

Second, I'm not familiar with this particular model of router, but I've found that many of the cheaper and/or older routers cannot handle the current speeds we see on cable and DSL connections. This could also be a problem with your cable or DSL connection. To check this, you can temporarily bypass your router and plug your modem directly into your computer. Remember this exposes your computer directly to the internet, so it's probably not a good idea to leave it that way. You may also have to reboot your modem and even reconfigure it and your computer to do this depending on your ISP. If it is still slow, you will need to contact your ISP and complain!

nope u probably have dsl

DsL Problems in my opinion:

DsL is a glorified phone connection its not smooth and is always in a state of flaux along with your neighbors there neighbors so on and so forth
technecoly i would run cable connection that does not flaux with neighbors always have a strong signal and wont interfere with your videos
DsL is slow as 58 bit data fax modem i found it a waist of money and time waiting for system to play catch up
now if you want to play videos with out interupt turn off cable dsl modem this will bring function back to normal in video mode
your comps fine its just your service provider

DsL is slow as 58 bit data fax modem i found it a waist of money and time waiting for system to play catch up
buy a cabled connection this will have great speed
or you can get an amplified signaler for you dsl from your service provider

Is there anyway to do a remote reset of a dsl modem?

The answer "depends." If the DSL modem is in bridge mode, then NO. If you have opened up a WAN management port in the DSL modem, then YES. If the modem's management port is not open to WAN access, then do what I do. Remote into the site, past the DSL, then go backwards into the LAN portion of the DSL and reboot it. But..of course these answers are too easy and not what you are looking for, probably. The DSL provider can reboot the dsl modem. But there is no software or command I'm aware of that can reboot or resync a "fritzed out" modem. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"
