Hi,

Offhand, it would seem that the Partition Table went bad. There are specialized programs/utilities for this purpose. One is Partition Magic (see if you can get a Demo) and other freewares. To give you a detailed procedure, pls reference this, this and/or this. Often, recovery could be performed but would require some close attention and time.

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hmmm..disappeared,,,from which viewing approach..that would be highly unlikely..however, there is one possible issue. it could be in the hidden folders..what menu are you referring to? what operating system is running?

I formatted my fat partition and now all my songs are gone

Hello
Formatting a partition of hard disc will wipe out all the data stored in it. There is now way to retrive the data from the formatted drive. You may have to backup the data before formatting. Now all lost have been lost for ever. OK.

Expand capacity of Apple TV

For some reasons, I haven’t made full use of my 40GB Apple TV in the last 2 years. Recently, I have more spare time to do so, and would like to use it in my living room with my wide screen TV to enjoy its functionality fully. It works fine to playback all the files I throw at it, but 40GB is too confining for all my photos and music, not to mention my movies and other video collection. To solve this problem, once I have to make my Mac Pro and iTunes running to stream all my data to the Apple TV. It seems a bit troublesome, I dislike it. So I look for a solution to expand the capacity of my Apple TV. Via Google, I’ve found some useful articles talking about this issue, and I followed them, and finally successfully upgrade the hard drive of the Apple TV lately. Here I’d like to document my process below, but before that, I’d like to show my gratitude to people who I’ve got useful info from their articles, even though I can not remember their exactly names now.
In summary, the process is relatively simple, a small 40GB hard drive can be freely replaced, thus becomes a DIY Apple TV.
Dismantle the Apple TV, remove the hard drive, and connect it to an Intel Mac Pro via WiebeTech Forensic DriveDock or other 2.5-inch hard drive FireWire bridge. Start the Mac, and you will see that hard drive partition of Apple TV is structured as follows:
/dev/disk5
#: type name size identifier
0: GUID_partition_scheme *37.3 GB disk5
1: EFI 34.0 MB disk5s1
2: 400.0 MB disk5s2
3: Apple_HFS OSBoot 900.0 MB disk5s3
4: Apple_HFS Media 36.0 GB disk5s4
400MB of space which could be used to store the system restore data. Extract overall image via CopyCatX, and recover them to a new hard drive which you want to change back. I found lots of people like using a Western Digital 120GB WD1200VE hard drive. Install the new hard drive to Apple TV, and in the test, you will find the system continues to recognize only 40GB of space, because the partition information is the same with the original 40GB hard drive. But in fact, there are more than 70GB of space not being used.

Remove the new hard drive to re-connect to the Mac, and allocate the unused more than 70GB space to the Media partition with the help of iPartition or other partitioning software. Be careful, not to change the EFI or the other 400MB partition.

After install it back to the Apple TV, all the 107GB space will be recognized completely, you are done!

Now I’m able to store more photos, movies, music, and television shows on the Apple TV. But when it comes to video playback, Apple TV has strict formats limitation, it caused troubles again, and I have to convert all my videos to Apple TV formats .mp4 and .mov in advance. However, this does not the most important thing I’m concerned, because I have already have a video converter on my Mac Pro, and my most intention is to watch my Blu-ray on it. Fortunately, via Google again, I get an available Blu-ray Ripper for Mac to meet my needs, which is able to run on Mac independently as long as you have an external BD drive. To keep HD quality as well as compress BD size, I usually select HD video as my output option. A great product, I like it. Besides this, it seems there are also another version developed for Windows user, attached this BD ripper here, maybe it’s your choice.
Well, by the way, Apple installed Fujitsu hard drives in original, and this could be due to their relatively small power and heat consumption, so when replacing the hard drive, you can also take this factor into account. In addition, the replacement of the hard disk will let you lost product warranty, please proceed with caution.

I have music saved on the hard drive of my tascam 2488, and i started to use the second partition of the hard drive to do more songs since the first is now full. My problem is that every time i try to...

sounds like a software problem, dont know if there is an update possible, but you can try this:

take out the drive, connect it to a pc, copy all data from both partitions to your pc, format tascam driver to one partition and copy all music from pc back to drive ;)

this will definetily help, thou you dont have the problem reading two partitions.

I've been exporting master tracks and now I've reached a point where the tascam says, "master track too big". how do I free up space on the FAT partition?

If you NO LONGER NEED the songs/data in the FAT partition, you can delete the entire contents thereof in the manner detailed below. Note that these instructions were taken directly from the Neo manual.

1 With the transport stopped, from the DISK menu, highlight FAT REFORM, and press YES/ENTER.
2 A pop-up message appears.
3 Ask yourself once more if you want to erase all the data on the FAT partition. Press YES/ENTER to continue with the operation when a pop-up appears, or press NO/EXIT to halt the operation.
4 When you reformat the FAT partition, four directories (folders) named WAVE, SMF, BACKUP and UTILITY are automatically created. These folders are used for audio files, Standard MIDI Files (SMF) and backup data and system utilities, respectively.

...this will reformat and thereby EMPTY the contents of the FAT partition and create the 4 new, empty files as listed above.

THINK before you do this though, and I hope this helps.

Load imported songs on tascam dp02 cf

Make sure you have the song loaded first. In this case it sounds like you are importing into a new song, so make sure that you have a new song created and loaded prior to importing.

Then go to the menu by pressing the 'MENU' sutton and from there select 'WAVE' and then 'IMPORT TRACK'. You'll see the list of wav files on the fat partition of the CF media displayed. Select the wav file with your beat track on it (use the DATA DIAL or up/down arrow buttons to highlight the right wav file) and press the 'YES/ENTER' button. You'll be prompted for the track to import into. Select Track01 and press the 'Yes/Enter' button again and the WAV file will be read and inported into track 1.

Please note that the wav file should be a 44.1 kHz, 16-bit and a mono wav before trying to import it. If the beat track was created as a stereo wav you'll have to go into a wav editor like Audacity and resave the file as a mono wav file first. Also for a wav with a bit rate higher than 16-bit, the DP-02 is going to truncate the bits rather than dither and this might effect quality adversly so you might want to make sure that the file is properly saved as 16-bit prior to attempting an import to avoid this.

Hope this helps.

Tascam DP-02CF: How to transfer files to my computer?

Hi,

You can't see the fat partition from within the DP-02. It's there, but only your PC will be able to read the contents of the fat partition when you have the USB 'opened' on the DP-02. The manual states that if your CF card is less than 5 Gb in size than you will only see/be able to select one partition. The default CF card that comes with the DP-02CF is only 1 Gb.

If you've created a backup or exported your wav files properly and everything is working ok with the CF, then you should be able to see backup or wav files showing up in the fat partition while connected to the PC. Even if nothing is backed up or exported you should still see the directory structure from your PC with the three folders, BACKUP, WAVE and UTILITY. As you are not even seeing these directories, what may have happened is that the fat partition had become corrupted or these folders had gotten erased.

I would have thought that reformatting the FAT partition would have fixed this problem however and that the DP02-CF would automatically recreate the required directories on the CF media after a reformat. The manual is unclear on this however.

So a couple of things you could try:

1. You describe opening the USB connection as 'push the USB button and then hit enter'. I was assuming you meant that you were selecting 'usb' from the menu and then pressing the 'enter' button to open the usb connection. You may wish to verify that the usb connection is being opened properly first.

2. If the connection is opening ok, and after a reformat you still aren't seeing any folders in the fat partition while connected to your PC with the usb open, you might wish to try to recreating those directories in the FAT partition yourself. While accessing the FAT partition (DP-02CF's removable drive) from the PC create the three directories exactly as named in the manual (WAVE, BACKUP, UTILITY). If that works, disconnect from the PC, try exporting a track or backing up a song again, and reconnect to the PC to see if you can see/access those files now.

Best of luck.

Rename a song file after copying

Hi,

I'm a little unclear about what you are trying to do. I'll assume that you have copied a song from one partition to another and now wish to change the song name so as to avoid confusion. To do so you need to call up the 'menu' (press menu button) and under 'song' go to 'load'. There you'll see a list of song names (including the song you have currently loaded and are working on). Just navigate to the song name and press the 'title' button (shift - menu) which will allow you to edit the song name. You don't have to reload the song for the title change to keep and you'll see the new title reflected in the LCD window after you press 'home' to return to the normal view.

Boot in TASCAM 2488

thiagofo,

Formatting of the hard drive is outlined on page 66 of the 2488 manual (assuming this is the old grey 2488 and not the newer blue MkII).

In case you don't have the manual handy, you can either format the entire drive (excluding the fat partition) or just one of the partitions. There is also another option to refrormat the fat partition.

To format the drive, (and create new partitions), go to the 'disk' menu, highlight 'format' and press 'enter'. You'll be asked to specify the new partition size (all partitions will be the size you choose). The press 'enter' again to proceed with the format. A new blank song will be created on each partition. Do not power off the 2488 while the format is in progress.

To format a single partition, from the 'disk' menu choose 'reform' and press 'enter'. You then choose (by highlighting) which partition you want to format and press 'enter' to format. You'll get the warning/confirm message and press 'enter' again to proceed.

The fat partition (visible via usb from a PC) can be formatted also. To do this select 'fat reform' from the disk menu and press 'enter' and then 'enter' again at the warning.

irvingsr3 - I'm not sure if resetting the unit is the easiest way to fix your problem. You might be able to perform a redo, or you might be able to just go and start a new song which will reset most of the control settings to their defaults. When you hit 'undo' it may have rolled back some of your input assignments or tracks which were armed for recording and that could explain why you can't seem to record now.

Play and Record button not working

I have the same problem with all three of my Tascam 2488 MKII's.
It's a software problem and starts to show up when the harddisk gets full.

Backup your song files ( something you have to do anyway ) and then reformat the entire hard disk.
Then restore the songs you were working on lately.

Before doing this rather huge task, you can copy your latest song to another partition and go on with this copy.
This is only a provisional solution.

Hope this helps !
Best regards

Usb file transfer

In reading and working with the unit, I have learned that the file transfer is for backup only. If you want to manipulate the file they have to be transferred individually via your sound card or an interface.
