Good guess on letting it cool. A single red light is an overheating problem. If your still under warrenty you can send it off to microsoft to fix. If not then you can try a couple of things to keep it cool.
1: Buy a small fan and point it at your xbox. Airflow is important, moving air is cooler and air that is standing still. 2: Buy an intercooler for your x-box. This costs between 20 and 30 USD ($). 3: Do both.
change your thermal pads as well. then overheat your xbox by wrapping it in towels and leaving it for about 20 minutes. let it completely cool and then turn it on again. this should reset the overheat sensor that keeps your xbox from booting
Wrap it in a couple of towels and let it run, 10-15 minutes, it will overheat and shut down and the three red lights will be flashing, then turn it off, let it cool, 15-30 minutes, turn it back on and bam, it should work, granted its not a permanent thing but it will work from a week-month, from then on the red ring of death will appear when it shuts down instead of the 2 lights, and you can either fix it yourself, do the towel trick again, or just send it to Microsoft if the warranty is still intact. trust me it works.
This is a common problem from the Xbox 360.
The only way to fix this problem is to call Microsoft or email them. Its something to do with the hardware failure. Its over heated. Their is one way to fix it but temporary.
Its called the towel trick.
First, Unplug your xbox.
Then wrap it around with Heavy towels dont expose anything on the xbox 360. Cover everything.
Then plug in the xbox 360 while the towels are around it. After you do all that you wait 15 minutes. Then unwrap the towel from the xbox 360. It should be very hot. Let it cool down for 2 minutes then plug everything in and it should work.
But I hope this helps you.
Ok so here is your problem, you are getting the 3 red lights due to a system/ hardware malfunction, possibly due to the spacers located next to the Xclamp on the inside of your board. If you dont want to open your console, try this.
1. Unplug your Audio/Video Cables from the xbox as well as you Hardrive.
2.Keep your Power cable in.
3.Wrap your broken 360 in 2 towels, so that it is completely covered and no air can escape.
4. Keep like that for 20 minutes.
5. The Xbox should be very hot at the end of the 20 minutes
6. Remove the towels and let cool for 15 minutes.
7. Plug everything back on and power up.
=) should work, but only temporary.
