SOURCE: short circuit

If you look into the USB port and there are four finger like metal contacts and one of these is bent and touching the metal casing it is shorting out the 5 volts supply. Remove the connection to the power supply and remove the battery then straighten the finers so they dont touch anything. Replace the power adaptor and try again - if the laptop now works that is fine but you will not be able to use that damaged usb port.

USB port for wireless mouse gets hot and not working

Hi,
1-try to connect another USB peripheral like USB flash or something else,if this does happen again you have some problem with your USB chip or maybe your main board or USB cabling in your laptop (some kind of short circuit),
2-if your problem still did not solve you have some short circuit or problem with your USB device and try repair or replace the device ,
3-if your problem persist and doesn't solve even with another device you must consider this note:

some USB devices needs 500ma current mode that only available in PCs and some devices and most laptop available in the market just support 100ma USB port

Usb device not recognized, works only when plugged on hub

All PCs provides power supply via USB port. The power is controlled by electronic circuit. Sometimes when overloaded the circuit burns out (the last controlling transistor, actually). This does not prevent the data communication, because it is separated circuit. But if the device is not powered it cannot communicate. When you plug the USB device to powered USB hub, then all go right.
Are you able to use the USB ports with other USB-powered devices like USB sticks, mouses, cameras? If not, the mentioned circuit is burned out. If they work OK, then your internal USB hub provides less power current than needed. In both cases there is nothing to do. The circuit resides on the mainboard of the laptop and replacement is expencive. Use it with that external USB hub you have.

I have a Asus P5PE-VM. When i turn on PC it gives me following error and shuts down after 15 sec. Cannot even get into Bois. "USB device over current status detected"

Couple of things will cause this:

1] a problem with the front USB connectors - you can try just unplugging them from the motherboard and see if this will help

2] a short circuit caused by the metal raisers that is used to hold the motherboard in place - sometimes - just loosening the screws that holds the motherboard in place will do the trick, but if u have the patience, you can remove the motherboard and look for any place that the metal from the raisers that holds the motherboard in place is touching tracks on the motherboard.

3] I don't think i should have to mention this but of course, if you plugged something into the USB port that is drawing too much current - just remove it.

My daughter broke one of my usb ports in the front of my asus cm1630 how do i get replacment parts can i buy a usb 2 or do i have to buy the whole setup that contains the usb ports and media card slots

USB 2.0 refers to the technology, not the connector itself.

Obtain another USB connector, and solder it in?
Sure, maybe. Depends on your de-soldering/soldering skills, and if the circuit board is damaged.

> Physically damaged in that the board is cracked, and circuit traces are ripped loose, (Repairable with a jumper wire, or wires), AND/OR the USB port was fried out (Short Circuit), and it fried out the entire circuit board.

Obtain another circuit board? This would be the way to go IMHO, but try to find one.
You may have luck on Ebay looking at Desktop Computers > Computers for Parts, or the actual circuit board itself, dunno.

Can I use a external audio card on matherboard ASUS a7v880? Is there a port on this motherboard for external audio card?

Yes, you can use one. Just plug it in a PCI slot; or of it's an USB one, in any of the USB ports of the motherboard.

Front usb port pin bent when plugged in device...computer imediately died...will not power up now

Ah.. That's not so good.
The new USB 2.0 ports carry a bit of power and can burn out things if they get shorted.

It is lucky that this was a front port and not a rear one.
As the front ports are generally connected to the motherboard by a cable that you should be able to find and disconnect the (With the power off, PC unplugged)

It is possible that with the damaged USB Port removed, the PC may boot and operate as normal.
If this doesn't help, you can try replacing the PC's power supply as it also might have gotten fried by the short.

If neither of these work then it would appear that your motherboard's power controlling circuits got fried and replacing it would be the only option left.

Good luck!
