Printing vertical grayish black ink on the left and right side of page
The pages are coming out of the printer with grayish black smudges about and inch wide on the right and left side of the page. We have taken the toner out looked inside and cannot find any dripping ink. The toner is only 3 or 4 months old. What can we do to get this stuff off our pages?

This is possibly toner on the paper feed rollers. If you happend to use refurbished cartridges they are often over filled to claim more pages for your buck. But they fail to say expect smudges down the printed page. use a cloth and some metho to clean the paper path
Calibrate your new blank ink cartridge, have some nozzle check, cleaning check, and printer alignment. This are procedure that new ink cartridge will have to calibrate before you use. Epson printer are very sensitive when capable of changing ink cartridge. Unlink HP directly work without any print test because the cartridge head and ink join together, Epson with ink cartridge and the head separate. Have some test on it at Printer Maintenance. I'm sure 100% works on it. Good luck!
Very nice trouble shooting. The image defect you describe point to the OPC or drum unit this is essentially the toner cart. In your case black. Measureing the distance between repetitive defects is a sure way of diagnosing problems such as yours. Again nice work.
Google repetitive defect ruler for your model to help in the future.
- Try to reallign the cartridge, run a print test, after that if the issue still persist - uninstall and reinstall software - run test and re-allign again the cardtridge using software. run print test again.
