PS3 update problems

While trying to update the ps3 to v 2.50 I keep getting the message "error encountered" and some 800 code. It downloads to 70%, then displays the error code. When trying to update from usb port the error that is displayed says "corrupt data". I don't want to update but the playstation network requires it. Help

I am having the same issue as iafarmerken.. .PS3 error code 8002F997. I have tried to roll the settings back to default, tried to update with a thumbdrive (per Sony's instructions), and used a compact flash card to try to update. My PS3 stops the update process at 69-70% as well. Currently trying to use the format utility to reformat the hard drive :( Any other input or suggestions would be great

I found the problem. Just reading around on the net about this problem a few people suggested unplugging everything .....including PS3, modem, router, computer.....everything for about 15 min. I did this and plugged everything in and tried to update again and bam!!!!!! Problem solved. Why this helps?....I think it is a dns issue conflicting with the download that corrupts the data on the ps3 update as well as when I tried to do it on the USB flash drive. This may not work for everyone but it did for me. Thanks for all the help you guys give out.

Did you reset your PS3 by holding down the front power button for 10 seconds? That should make the Play Station revert back to the last settings/Os that worked.

    Hope that helps

Thanks guys, I got it fixed! I unplugged the power from the PS3 for at least 30 minutes, and to be safe i rebooted my router. I was then able to download and install the 2.5 update!

Thanks again!

Ok, no matter how you try to install the firmware it will always write it to the hard drive first before install. Now if it gives you the 800 error while downloading it's your hard drive and it may need to be re-formatted or replaced. If you get an error during installation, then therewas a misplaced piece of code during the download and it needs to be downloaded again.

BTW, the power button default reset is ONLY for the Video output settings.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy gaming!!

A sony update came.i started to install.then a error message said update error happen and will try did it 3 times.till a error number came up.went to sony site and it said to try reset.but...

If it was an error after the update was downloaded then the only thing I can think of is restoring the PS3 to factory settings and trying again.
Many times I got such an error it was because my connection was fickle, it would keep cutting out and not properly downloading the update and causing an error. In this case I would have to just keep restarting the update and hope it would finish.
Hope this helps.

Playstation 3 (PS3) Console: trying to update software and keep getting the 800...

You will need an extra 2.5" HDD. use a laptop HDD.
So we all know with this error, it won't allow you to enter in the recovery menu because it would try to re-install the bad 2.8 update firmware again and again once it turned on.
1. So what I did was I swapped the laptop HDD into the PS3, it won't be able to read the HDD but it will allow you to enter the recovery menu now.
(for those who do not know how to get into the recovery menu, here is the instruction
2. Once I'm in the recovery menu, I took out the laptop HDD and put back in the PS3 HDD.
3. I also downloaded the 3.01 firmware from the PS website and uploaded into my USB drive and put that in the PS3 slot.
4. At this point, you want to select "system update" and update to the 3.01 version.

For some reason, the first time doing this the system froze at 67% with a new error (but i didn't write down the code). So I had repeat step 1 and 2, but this time when I put back in the PS3 HDD I chose "restore file system" without having to do the system update again. Then it gave me another error at around 65% that said the disk is corrupted and tell me to press OK to format the disk. After it formatted, it automatically install the 3.01 version and the system is fixed.

Downloading ps3 update and I'm stuck on a error loop

hey mate!
i had the same problem as you have with a 40 gb model i bought with a ylod and fixed. after i assembled it i tried to update the firmware but it got stuck in a loop between 69 to 70 % and wouldn`t finish the install. after doing some research i found out the the error number that appeared (cant remember the number now) happned because some hardware wasn`t connected the way its suppose to,when 69% will indicate the blu ray drive, and indeed i noticed that the clip on the ribbon was broken . i had to use a piece of cardboard at first to shove it right to its place nice and tight and started the ps3 again , (failed again because my wifi antenna wasnt connected, but after i connected everything...) the update finished and i was a happy man!
so if your ps3 have been opened in the past , there is your problem.
hope i healped and good luck!

I have had PS3 for 3 weeks. The first week PS3 worked fine. Then I received messages asking me to download update data. The only game that askd me to do this was FIFA09. The PS3 alway's crashes when I get...

I have to say I haven't had lot of joy downloading this particular update directly to PS3 either.

The alternative approach (which worked like a dream for me) is to use your pc to save the update onto a memry stick, then to plug that into one of the PS3's USB ports and do the update from there.

There's a detailed explanation of how to do it towards the bottom of

Sounds like an internal error with the hardware.

Ps3 System Update Failed, PS3 boots with error code 8002F14E.

-Open the side of your PS3 where your HDD is. Take the screw out, but leave the HDD in.
-When the update begins, pull your HDD out of the slot. It will tell you an error occured and it tells you to restart your system and try again. Instead, let the count from 60 run out, your screen will go blank for about 30 seconds then it will start back up and tell you that your Hard Drive needs to be reformatted. If you do not get this msg after 30 seconds, do it again until it does! Now, slide your HDD into place again - (make sure your controller is PLUGGED IN) and press the white PS3 button on the controller. It will then ask you to either press start and select at same time OR white PS3 Button - PRESS START and SELECT. Do not agree to user agreements!! Simply hit cancel and it will kick back to the PS3 start up screen.
