While trying to update the ps3 to v 2.50 I keep getting the message "error encountered" and some 800 code. It downloads to 70%, then displays the error code. When trying to update from usb port the error that is displayed says "corrupt data". I don't want to update but the playstation network requires it. Help

Re: PS3 update problems
Ok, no matter how you try to install the firmware it will always write it to the hard drive first before install. Now if it gives you the 800 error while downloading it's your hard drive and it may need to be re-formatted or replaced. If you get an error during installation, then therewas a misplaced piece of code during the download and it needs to be downloaded again.
BTW, the power button default reset is ONLY for the Video output settings.

If it was an error after the update was downloaded then the only thing I can think of is restoring the PS3 to factory settings and trying again.
Many times I got such an error it was because my connection was fickle, it would keep cutting out and not properly downloading the update and causing an error. In this case I would have to just keep restarting the update and hope it would finish.
Hope this helps.
i have this problem try doing this----- dowload the update on your USB flash drive from your computer and then plug in your USB flash drive into the ps3 the and it will automatically be installed onto uour ps3 SIMPLE!!!
You will need an extra 2.5" HDD. use a laptop HDD. So we all know with this error, it won't allow you to enter in the recovery menu because it would try to re-install the bad 2.8 update firmware again and again once it turned on. 1. So what I did was I swapped the laptop HDD into the PS3, it won't be able to read the HDD but it will allow you to enter the recovery menu now. (for those who do not know how to get into the recovery menu, here is the instruction http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?message .uid=39144801) 2. Once I'm in the recovery menu, I took out the laptop HDD and put back in the PS3 HDD. 3. I also downloaded the 3.01 firmware from the PS website and uploaded into my USB drive and put that in the PS3 slot. 4. At this point, you want to select "system update" and update to the 3.01 version.
For some reason, the first time doing this the system froze at 67% with a new error (but i didn't write down the code). So I had repeat step 1 and 2, but this time when I put back in the PS3 HDD I chose "restore file system" without having to do the system update again. Then it gave me another error at around 65% that said the disk is corrupted and tell me to press OK to format the disk. After it formatted, it automatically install the 3.01 version and the system is fixed.
try updating it via wired connection, or getting 100% signal wireless, keep on trying until it finishes downloading, if its the last update V3.21 I believe it also happen to me with my 80gb as well! it might also take a really long time to download be patient
This is a worldwide issue with the Sony Network today which might be due to system maintenance. Sony is working on the problem and the issue will be fixed soon.Your system should work normally when the issue is fixed.
-Open the side of your PS3 where your HDD is. Take the screw out, but leave the HDD in. -When the
update begins, pull your HDD out of the slot. It will tell you an
error occured and it tells you to restart your system and try again.
Instead, let the count from 60 run out, your screen will go blank for
about 30 seconds then it will start back up and tell you that your
Hard Drive needs to be reformatted. If you do not get this msg after 30 seconds, do it again until it does! Now, slide your HDD into place
again - (make sure your controller is PLUGGED IN) and press the white PS3 button on the controller. It will then ask you to either press start and select at same time OR white PS3 Button - PRESS START and SELECT. Do not agree to user agreements!! Simply hit cancel and it will kick back to the PS3 start up screen.
