Viking 990 S. Machine had been working fine. Halfway through project, it started skipping several stitches at a time, only occasionally catching the bottom thread.

One of the things that can cause this is lint buildup around the back of the hook driver. Open the bobbin cover and look just above the hinge, at the bottom edge of the black hook cover. If lint is peeking out at you, it may be time to have it serviced. You may be able to get most of the lint out if you remove the needle plate and blow onto the back side of the hook area with canned air. Keep the cover open so the lint can come out.
Now I am assuming that you have replaced the needle.

Skipping stitches?

skipped stitches is usually an indication of timing of hook and needle being off. The needle is not always picking up the bobbin thread. Suggest that it be serviced by an authorized Husqvarna Viking Dealer. You can find the nearest dealer by click on the "Dealer" link at http://www.husqvarnaviking.com

Have Viking 990 and feed dogs not working. Local repair man kept for over a month and then said it was the circuit board and that Viking no longer making circuit board for 990-- or, that machine can't be...

Is it that the feed dogs won't go up and down, or that you can't adjust the stitch length? If the feed dogs won't go up and down after you have released the feed dog button and cycled the handwheel one revolution, than there is a mechanical adjustment needed. I the stitch length can't be ajdusted, that It's either a circuit board of a step motor problem. The repair shop should be able to tell you that they swaped the feed motor with the zig zag motor to test this issue.

I own a husqvarna classica 100 the problem I am having is it is skipping stitches. It is used solely as straight stitch machine.

Have you changed your needle? Try that first, if it doesn't work, the timing is off and needs repair.

Thread breaks and skips stitches

Open the needle plate, remove the bobbin and bobbin case.....refer to your manual.

Clean away lint and threads.

Thread with the presser foot up.

If this continues, take the machine and samples of the mis-stitching in for service. It could be the timing needs to be adjusted by a professional.

Problems with lower thread tension

Did you bend the throat plate? I have done that and it was a nightmare. I took it off and gently hit it from the backside with a towel over it to bend it back the way it was. It worked fine.

Viking is skipping some stitches when it is on zigzag

These are great machines but after 25 years there are probably a lot of problems that need to be fixed. It could be as easy as buffing or replacing your needle plate. If you take it in for service (and can actually find someone who is good with this machine) you will probably pay $200 to $400 to get it back to 'factory' state.

Bernina 1300 dc overlocker skipping stitches

Make sure the chain stitch thread is threaded exactly as it should be, make doubly sure the thread comes off the bobbin vertically and runs through all eyes smoothly. Any faults in the threading causes extra tension at the needle despite what the tension is set on.
If this is not the cause then the needle depth and the looper timing needs checking.
