BIOS is unlikely to fail from a software fix such as SP2 but you may have too little ram or too slow of a processor to handle changes.
You may have to do a complete reinstallation of XP to set things right and then try the SP2 upgrade again.
Windows is unfortunately sometimes infuriatingly cranky and may require repeated installation before settling down.

Also, eMachines may have tweaked their version of XP in a way not compatible with SP2.
Check their website or MS Knowledge Base for clues.

Yes.

First check the cable bus from the motherboard to the screen to see if that is not damaged.

Could anyone tell me the bios boot order for a

I would recommend just booting to your bios and checking. Just press F10 when your computer boots up and look for the boot order under the Bios. Since there are several BIOS options out there check under "System Settings" first I believe. Sorry I havn't touched a EMachine in 10 years.

Default boot order for emachine laptop 732

Step 1:
All computer systems go through a set of instructions called the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) when they are turned on. The BIOS checks all of the hardware and software installed on the computer to make sure they are working properly before loading the operating system. You may need to access the BIOS menu periodically to find out the current version of the BIOS you have if there are upgrades available. The command you use to access the BIOS settings on an Emachines computer will vary depending on the specific model you have.

Access the Start menu and click "Shut Down." Select the "Restart" option. Wait for the Emachines logo to appear on the screen as the computer begins booting up again. Press the "Tab" key when the logo appears and see if the computer switches to the BIOS menu. Press the "Escape," "Delete," or "F2" keys if the "Tab" key doesn't take you to the BIOS menu screen. Use the right arrow key to highlight the "Main" entry and press Enter. Scroll down to the heading labeled "BIOS version." Check the long string of numbers and letters under the "BIOS version" heading to locate the current BIOS version your Emachines is using. Press the "F10" key to exit the BIOS menu screen and finish booting up the computer's operating system.

Replacing battery

the battery is on the motherboard, it's a small round silver battery, just pop it out and replace. you shouldn't need to save your bios settings. when you put the new battery in. you don't need to do anything apart from taking old battery out and putting new one in.

How to reset bios emachine d 725

Hello,
While computer is booting you will be prompted with a message saying Press( ) to enter setup/bios the hot key will be one of the following. F1, F2, DEL, ESC, or F10. After that its as simple as choosing reset to default.
If bios has a password which is keeping you from getting in, take off the computers side panel. Locate the watch battery, and remove it. Leave it out for 20 mins before replacing. Start up your computer, and you should be good to go.

My e-machine w3410 gives me a disk boot error insert disk and hit enter what does that mean

You probably have a non-bootable disc in the CD drive - when the computer powers up, your BIOS's first boot device is probably the CD drive and since it has a non-bootable disc in it, it can't boot. Remove the disc and re-boot your computer.

Old emachine T2642 will not boot...disk monitor LED stays on and CPU fan does not rotate...no boot access to CD-ROM, or disk drives...changed power supply...think it might be BIOS backup battery...

It sounds like a dead motherboard. Try removing the CMOS(BIOS) battery and replacing it. Then try removing and replacing the CPU as well. If you get the same result then you might be looking at replacing the motherboard.

Emachine boots to bios with a new hard drive installed

Go inside to your BIOS menu then set the BOOT sequence to CD as the first boot so when your PC with the operating system installation disk inside it will load the installation wizard.
Good luck hope that helps........
