Question about Ryobi 30 Cubic Centimeter Curved Shaft Gas Trimmer

1 Answer

31 cc Straight shaft/ head won't turn when connected and running

I recently got back from oversea's and my son was using my ryobi. He said that it was working fine and now all of the sudden the trimmer head where the string is at won't turn under power. It sometimes will slightly grab and spin but when it is put under duress it starts to studder and the string winds on the head.

You probably need a slight carburetor adjustment. Try to turn the L mixture screw (the one near the bottom of the carburetor on the air filter side, closest to the engine) 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn counterclockwise. These mixture adjustment screws ( L and H) have odd heads on them and conventional tools won't turn them. I use an automotive type plastic wire connector (around 22 gauge) with a ring terminal end which I can hold. Tap the plastic end of the wire terminal connector onto the head of the screw with a small hammer and this will enable you to adjust the L screw. This adjustment will increase you high speed side and possibly allow it to run off choke in a regular manner.

The lower shaft on my ryobi stoped turning, how do i fix this problem.

You didn't quite give me enough info on which machine you have ... but if it is one that allows the lower half of the shaft to be removed for using other implements, disconnect the shaft and try to turn the inner splined shaft by hand and see if the head turns, if not you may have a broken shaft cable or a frozen bearing in the shaft head...this will necessitate removal of the head and replacement of either the shaft cable or the machine head...if all is working then check the shaft going to the clutch...hope this helps... ;-D

Check the metering diaphram and check valve in the carby. The valve might be leakin and the diaphrm might be hard. do a google on the make of the carby as these are fitted with a few makes manly Zamer but. DONT use compressed air to clean or automotive type carby cleaner all will kill the valve and its not replacable..

I have a 31 cc ryobi weed eater start for about

I think a new carburetor kit and a good carburetor tune up is in order my friend. Sounds like it's starving for gas. If it bogs down after warm up when you throttle it, then yes it needs a carb tuning. The L screw is the low side screw and should be turned in lightly until it seats then back it out one and quarter turns (1 1/4). The H screw is your high speed screw. Also, turn it in lightly until it seats, then back it out approximately a 3/4 turn. With these settings the unit should start and may even stay running. Again, if it bogs when throttled, while running turn the L screw out a little more maybe only 1/16th of a turn and then try it again. If it does rev then you'll have to adjust the H screw in about a 1/16th of a turn. But make sure you only do this after the engine has warmed up.

Hope this works, good luck

Maybe, but it sounds as though the clutch may be the problem. If you can get it to run properly except for the turning of the head, check the clutch. If it is just not running with high enough RPM's, the problem may be the engine. I would check the clutch...I may be wrong and it may be the shaft. That would be an easy fix...Lee

Ryobi CS30 straight shaft. I can not get the string head off to replace the line.

There should be a half sphere shaped object over the spool of string. Twist off in a counter clockwise motion and the spool will come off so that you can replace the line.

My new Ryobi boggs down/ stalls as soon as I pull on the trigger.

You should have 2 small adjuster screws next to each other on top of the carb.Try adjusting each of them a little with a thin screwdriver as the engine is running.Put strimmer on the ground first and adjust screws while you are revving engine until it runs correctly.Trial and error and very small adjustments can make quite a difference.Hope this helps.
