Question about Toshiba TN50X81 50" Rear Projection Television

How to clean CRTs and mirrors

There are lines and distortion of the picture on the screen. It looks like perhaps spiders have gotten into the cabinet and built webs over the CRTs and/or mirrors. So far, I have not been able to figure out how to open the front of the cabinet, or remove the viewing screen to gain access to the CRTs and mirrors inside. Does anyone have this info or a source for a service manual?

Clean lens on Mitsubishi VS 8087?

hello!really, you can't clean lens to improve the picture quality. it just won't make it worth. I've seen lenses and mirror covered with 1/16 inch layer of the dust, smoke, etc. Wiping them off didn't make much difference if your CRTs(picture tubes) are strong. If those are weak or coolant contaminated(cloudy), no cleaning will drastically improve the picture. Except for "basic" cleaning, which requires disassembling of the cabinet, detaching the mirror and spending couple hours to do so, there is not much you can do yourself. Replacing coolant requires 'top gun" skills, restoring CRTs emissions requires $1,000+ device and knowledge "how to" and 'how not to fry" tubes. If picture is not too bad, but out of convergence, there is nothing to do with any procedures, described above. Especially, if coolant leaked onto boards(very common problem). In any case, there is a MAJOR repair involved, possibly at the board replacement level. Not a D.I.Y. project. If nothing relates to your case, just poke set open from the back(carefully) on top of the "bulge". Clean it with "windex" or "invisible glass", using "bounty" paper towels and try to enjoy the show!good luck,Alex.

Cleaning webs from inside screen

There are two ways to do this---the hard way which is to remove the entire front screen OR

What I do is (with the set unplugged) remove the back cover of the set; you should see the three large black lens.

Most of these sets there will be enough room to get a swiffer duster up inside to gently catch and remove all the spider webs. If there is not enough room let me know and I will tell you how to remove the front screen.

Also---if you can see those large black lens---clean the dust off of them with a lens cloth or paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on the towel.

If you can reach the webs from the back do not exert pressure when you wipe the inside of the screens---easy to scratch them.

If you have questions let me know BEFORE you attempt this.

If this helped or told you something you did not know rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Mitsubishi 55 hdtv Went through a fire.. Still works but has a haze to it.. I cleaned crts and the screen and mirror.. Can anyone help??

physically look into crt's. if picture is clear, then the screen is made of two lenses. a fresnel and a lenticular. they are sandwiched together. it is smoke residue between these two screens. you just cant wipe front and back of screen. you have to wipe in between the two "screens" . that will fix it

Hitachi 51UWX20B spider web like lines help

I know my response is a while after you asked, but to clean the inside of the tv case is pretty simple.

Remove the bottom speaker cover...on this model you just pull it off. There is no clips or screws.

Once the speaker cover is off you will see the bottom of the screen, there is 4-5 screws on the bottom on each side....I think 4 in the gray plastic and 1 in a black metal strap. With all of those screws out pull out SLIGHTLY on the screen and push up. The top is held in with a down force clamp and you are just popping it out of that....It will pop back in once you are done.

Now clean the back side of the screen, the mirror and CAREFULLY dust off the lenses. I myself did not want to use any cleaners (to avoid streaking) so I used a new microfiber dusting cloth. My picture became brighter and the "crack" that I thought I had was just a dust web....

Hope this helps and good luck

Sony kf-60we610 washed picture

if everything including sony menu is unclear, yeah cleaning may help. dirt can get inside the engine too. look at a white screen, this is your answer (or a black in some cases). any dirt on mirror or lense will be uncolored distortions. colored distortions are inside the light engine.

1998 Mitsubishi vs-60601 picture is dull and not as vibrant as it should be

the first thing I would do is to clean the lenses of the CRTs they may be coated with dust that will dim the picture. other than that the CRTs may be failing since the phospher of CRTs fade in brightness over time and the only solution is to replace all three CRTs. the CRTs I have discovered are no longer availible.

Phillips

Hi. I had the same problem with my Philips RPTV and the fix is extremelly ease. You just need to open the back cover (mine uses torx screws). Inside the tv is very mechanic. You will find the three CRTs and most likely the lenses are dirty. You just need to wipe them off with a soft cloth. Also the CRTs project the image not directly to the screen, but to a big mirror and that mirror will be most likely dirty (like when you open the hot water in front of a mirror). Once you clean the mirror and the crts, your tv will like as the they you got it.

the coolant most likely needs changing in the CRTs. Another possibilty is the mirror has become dull. use a damp soft cloth to clean the mirror then dry also clean the CRT lenses . Dont use windex. You will be amazed the difference just polishing the mirror can make in picture quality. Looking into the CRT lenses while they are on will tell you if any groth are present in the CRT coolant chambers.

Appears that lint is on one of the lenses

this could be a contaminant inside one of the lenses, or possibly spider webs inside the tv.. This is a very common problem. Remove the back of the tv, you will be able to look around the back of the screen with a flashlight and see if there are any spiderwebs. at this time you should also clean your lenses and mirror with some glass cleaner . this will improve your picture as well.

Dirty screen but it is behind the outside screen.

The front screen with the frame does remove from the cabinet giving you access to the mirror and CRT lens. Remove the speaker grill, remove the four screws on the bottom of the frame, then working underneath a corner proceed to pop the rivets holding the frame to the cabinet. It will seem impossible at first because you have to use a lot of force to pop each one out. When reinstalling,a rubber mallet may help popping each rivet back in (I am not kidding when I say they are tight)
