Internet Intermittent Drop Out

I have a network with a cable modem feeding a linksys 8 port router hard wired . I have a wireless Linksys router tied to one of the ports of the first router. It has worked fine for over a year. Now the internet drops out on the whole network (hard wired and wireless). I changed the 8 port hard wired router with a 4 port one and it aorkde for a day and the problem returned. Could the wirless router be causing the problem? Also, when settingit up. The wireless router would not work with the feed cable from the hard wired router tied to the wireless wan port. I had to put in a data port to work, but it has worked fine for over a year.

I know that it has worked previously, which frequently happens even though it may not technically correct. When software is changed on one or more computers, or seemingly, enough time passes, things go haywire.

Your cable modem connects you to the outside world, it assigns IP addresses by DHCP (if enabled), to each connected device, so does a wireless router. If you connect the WAN port on the wireless router to a regular port on the cable modem/router, your wireless router will recieve an IP from the first router. Then it will assign addresses similarly which could be the same range, This is known as double NATting. Since you connected the the wireless router as a hub, it only assigns wireless addresses, not wired ones. Since they may be in the same range, this could work, but not reliably.

Here is what to do;

  1. Do nothing to the primary cable router.
  2. Connect a laptop or other computer to one of the lan ports of the wireless router. Nothing should be connected to the other ports.
  3. Manually assign this PC the address 192.168.1.2
  4. Using your web browser on the PC, connect to http://192.168.1.1
  5. The default login is left blank, password is admin.
  6. Network Setup tab
The Network Setup section changes the settings on the network connected to the Router’s Ethernet ports. Disable the DHCP server setting
Wireless Setup is performed through the Wireless tab.
At the bottom of the page click SAVE SETTINGS
  7. The Setup Tab - Advanced Routing
This tab is used to set up the Router’s advanced functions. Operating Mode allows you to select the type(s) of advanced functions you use. Dynamic Routing will automatically adjust how packets travel on your network. Static Routing sets up a fixed route to another network destination.
Operating Mode. Select the mode in which this Router will function. Since another Router exists on your network, select Router. When Router is chosen, Dynamic Routing will be enabled.
Dynamic Routing. This feature enables the Router to automatically adjust to physical changes in the network’s layout and exchange routing tables with the other router(s). The Router determines the network packets’ route based on the fewest number of hops between the source and the destination. This feature is Disabled by default.
From the drop-down menu, you can also select LAN & Wireless, which performs dynamic routing over your Ethernet and wireless networks. You can also select WAN, which performs dynamic routing with data coming from the Internet. Finally, selecting Both enables dynamic routing for both networks, as well as data from the Internet.
At the bottom of the page click SAVE SETTINGS
  8. Connect wireless WAN connector to one one cable router lan ports
The PC should be changed back to DHCP for its IP and everything should work normally. All PCs on the system should get their IP address from the primary router only and should be visible to each other.

Good luck!

To isolate the problem beter connect your wireless router directly to the modem and configure it, check if you are able to go online properly so that you can figure out the problem if your wireless router is not working properly, try upgrading the latest firmware and reset the router and reconfigure the router and that will fix your problem...

Linksys router not recognize internet

Make sure your router's WAN port is set to dynamic IP. If the light on the front doesn't glow/blink for the WAN port, try a different cable. If a different cable doesn't work it's probably toast. :( This problem appears to be directly linked to the relationship between the WAN port and the modem. Given that the devices can connect to the router, but not internet, it has to be the WAN. Sometimes if the modem goes out it will send too much voltage through to the router and fry the WAN. Had that happen to my parents router. If the above doesn't "fix ya" then try a different router.

Worst case, you might have to put a wireless card in your PC and bridge the modem (wired connection) to the wireless card and broadcast for your wireless devices. At least until you get a new router.

How can I get the router IP of my Linksys 2.4GHz broadband router?

The Linksys G router gives you both wired and wireless connections over a broadband Internet connect to create a local area network. The Linksys router is compatible with wireless G and B devices, through the 2.4-GHz wireless band. The wireless speed is at 54 megabytes per second and you can get 100 megabytes per second with a wired connection. You have to set up the wireless configuration on the Linksys before using it on your network.

Plug the router's power cable into an electrical outlet. Attach an Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back of the router. Connect the other end into your broadband modem. Connect your computer to the Linksys G using another Ethernet cable. This Ethernet cable can go into any of the wired router ports. Open your Internet browser. Type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar and hit "Enter." This is your router's IP address and the home of its Web configuration page. Click "Wireless." Click "Manual." Alter your SSID, also known as your network name. You can change this name to any value that you want. You can also change the wireless channel if you are in an area with many wireless connections that may interfere. Click "Save Changes." Click "Wireless Security." Choose an encryption method to encrypt your wireless transmissions. WPA or WPA2 are common security protocols you can use in wireless networks. Input a network key, also known as the network password. Click "Save Changes."

HOW TO USE INTERNET IN MORE THAN ONE PC FROM LINKSYS WIRELESS G B

You have two ways on how you can get other computer online through this router. First, you can wired them (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the router. They are the ones labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Second is through wireless, but those computers that will connect through wireless must also have a wireless adapter to be able to pick up the signal that this router is broadcasting.

Can connect to internet directly through modem. When connected through Linksys WRT54GS router, all lights are ok on both modem and Linksys--including internet. (Have had this router for 2 years...no...

As last resort you might want to use a JTAG cable and debricking programming software. If your router is brikced or you want to change the firmware this cable can do it. The cable will connect to your parallel port and your wireless router so you can repair your router. They are about $5.95.

Brand new linksys wireless, Host (Hard wired)has intermittent connectivity. Indicates it is conneted and is working properly.Cannot browse Web. The wireless part works great!

try to plug the Ethernet cord for the Host computer on another Ethernet port on the Linksys router.

have you tried replacing the Ethernet cable that's connecting the Host computer to the linksys router?

check if Host computer can get a response from a website by going to Start>Run, then type CMD on the Run box and click OK. On the black screen, type PING www.yahoo.com then press Enter.. if you get the word reply 4 times, it means the computer is connected to the Internet.
If there's no response from the PING test, it means there's totally no connection.

It's also possible the problem is with the Local Area Network adapter or Ethernet adapter. Try disabling the Ethernet adapter and re-enable it by going to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections, you should see the Local Area Connection, right click on it then select Disable then Enable it again. then observe if you're still experiencing intermittent connection on the Host computer.

and if you have security software, try disabling it temporarily and check the connection again.

and let's make sure the cable or dsl modem is connected to the Internet port on the back of the Linksys router.

How to Install a Linksys Wireless - B 204GHz 802.11b Router

Turn off your modem, plug your modem into the WAN port on the Linksys. Turn on the modem and wait for it to authenticate and connect. Then turn on the router by plugging it in. Plug in a network cable from ports 1-4 (does not matter which) into your PC. After your PC boots up, open your web browser. By default all linksys routers are set to a certain IP Subnet. So, in the web browser address bar, type in http:\\192.168.1.1 and hit enter. It will ask for a username and password. admin for both. The rest is self explanitory...just follow the tabs.
