It's a Nikon AS - DX - should it have a preview? Thanks for your quick reply

How about going to the Nikon site and reading the manual??.

  • kakima Feb 07, 2012

"AS - DX" isn't a Nikon camera model. "DX" describes the sensor size --- it can apply to either a camera or a lens. I don't know about "AS" --- if it's "AF-S" then it applies to a lens.
Since we got this far, I'm assuming it's a Nikon dSLR. There should be a badge on the front of the camera with the model number. It'll be a "D" followed by one, two, three, or four digits and maybe a letter or two.

It's a Nikon D40. You are right, it's AFS - DX on the lens
    Thanks

Hi there:
You can view pictures in the folder when connected the camera at pc monitor? but cannot take pictures or movies... the LCD stays blank?
If this answer is yes, could be a problem with the CCD image sensor, if no, your LCD display go to bad and will need replacement.

Check this interesting article about bad CCDs.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

There is a third possibility, which ZJ glossed over. Some Nikon cameras simply do not show a preview image. This is why I keep asking for the model of the camera. I would prefer to find a solution that does not involve sending the camera in for repairs.

The good news is that your camera doesn't need to be repaired. The bad news is that the D40 will not allow you to preview images on the screen.
The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. You frame the picture through the viewfinder, seeing what the lens sees. Nikon introduced the LiveView capability with the D3 and D300, released years after the D40. The screen is for menus, shooting information, and reviewing photos after they're taken.

The problem is not with the LCD or the camera - You have got it set to ecomony / power save mode. Fixable through camera settings.

LCD Display is Black

the image in the LCD monitor will darken in strong sunlight or bright light. This is normal occurrrence in device CCDs and does not contitute a malfunction. This image will not be recoded when shooting still photos, but it will be recorded wihen shooting movies.Read you owner manual and adjust the MENU, according with your o. manual.Otherwise you must go the repair shop
God bless you

Nikon d40 motnior blank while taking picture.

That's entirely correct. Live view cannot work on SLR's whilst the photo is being taken due to the requirement for the mirror and live view sensor to flip out of the way during image capture.

Live view on SLR cameras is a misleading description, it's really a live preview instead.

Poor lcd image quality

This is normal operation, it gives you a quick preview followed by a detailed one, if the camera was to put a detailed preview up straight away you would just have a blank screen to look at for 2 seconds
