To go to system registry click on start>all programs>accessories>run then type regedit and press enter. Don't change anything unless you know what you are doing. It sounds as though it could be a driver problem though, try updating the driver from device manager. Right click the device and click on properties then update driver.
The only other solution would be to restore your computer to an earlier time when you know that the drive was working properly. Click on start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore and choose a date when you know everything was working okay. I hope this helps.

The Pioneer dvd+-rw DR-K17Y ata Device in my Dell Inspiron E1705 has stopped working. The drawer won't open (without the help of an unbent paper clip) and the disc does not spin up. Application software...

This sounds as a hardware problem, maybe a gear or a servo engine. Its a common problem since the mechanism is small and mostly plastic. If you have the chance use a live cd or live usb to see if it is not a windows problem. In my opinion the best solution is to replace the drive.

Need to find correct driver to reinstall.

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.

If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in "My Computer", please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showth...t=21669&page=4

It contains instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix

Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.

And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

Code: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131
(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)

Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from the Web site below.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

After performing this registry fix, just reboot the pc. Now your drive should be visible in My Computer and work properly.

If the DVD-rw drive is seen under OS please follow this steps. We will edit some registry:
-Click the Start button, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
-In the User Account Control window, type your password or click Continue.
-In Registry Editor, expand the following registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
-In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
-Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
-In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then Click Delete.
-Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
-Quit Registry Editor by clicking Exit on the File menu.
-Restart the computer.
- If resolution is not effective, please update dvd-rw firmware .

By mistake I bought a dvd rw disc instead of dvd-rw disc and recorded a holiday video on my camcorder with it. I usually then upload the contents of the dvd onto my hard drive (Pioneer) and then download...

Try uploading to your PC then converting it to AVI this keeps quality of video. Then if you want to download to a disk use Nero to convert it to VOB (DVD format) and burn off. You can also use Nero to erase the disk. (Nero 7 or more recent preferably.) You must also be sure you PC DVD read write head can take the DVD +/- RW. CHeck compatability.

I have a 5 month old acer laptop that came with a dvd rw doudle layer disc burner.... this is what it says when i find discription in the computer.... 6.0.6000.16386 version driver# signed by micro...

You have to manually download the latest drivers from the Manufacturer and then point Vista where it is when the New Hardware wizard tries to install it.

Or your best bet is to go to Acer's support site and download the Driver for your DVD drive.
