Regardless of how you connect, you must first have a Internet Service Provider.
If you don't already have one, look in your LOCAL phone book under "internet", call a few and find out what they have to offer. If your just surfing the net, reading e-mails, etc. a 1.2m connection will suffice.
If your gaming, hosting a web site , or performing any other bandwidth consuming activity you might consider a faster connection.
The price per month is also a factor.
i usually take a few notes on price, availability in my area, speeds offered, features offered and wether they give me a free modem with thier service.
dont do 56K dial-up, you will beat yourself silly while you wait for the webpages to load.
