As you can see from the information below there are different requirements for RAM to work stable in your system . Most importand are the RAM VOLTAGE , SPEED , and Configuration of chips. you will need to consult the manual for qualified RAM requirements. Some RAM will work but not very stable. make sure the voltage supplied by your system is enough for the RAM. If you are running DDR RAM in dual channel mode, the ram needs to be the same size also. DIMM modules for the HP computer must meet the following requirements

  • The number of pins on the DIMM must match the socket type.
  • DDR memory requires a 184-pin slot and 1.8 operating voltage.
  • DDR2 memory is not compatible with DDR1 memory and requires a 240-pin slot and 2.5 operating voltage.
  • Synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM): Only use DDR type SDRAM memory if the computer came with DDR-SDRAM.
  • SO-DIMM modules for the HP computer must meet the following requirements
    • The number of pins on the DIMM must match the socket type.
    • SO-DIMM memory requires a 200-pin slot.
    • DDR2 SO-DIMMs are not compatible with DDR1 DIMM and DDR2 DIMM memory modules.
    • With a computer running at a system bus of 533 MHz or 667 MHz, use a PC2-4200 (DDR2 DIMM 533) type.
    • The following requirements must be met for the DDR memory to function in dual channel mode:
      • Same density (256MB, 512MB, etc.)
      • Same DRAM chip technology (x8 or x16)
      • All either single-sided or dual-sided
      • Matched in both Channel A and Channel B memory channels

Double data rate (DDR) memory can operate in dual channel mode. The motherboard specifications of your computer should state if dual channel mode is supported. Dual channel memory mode provides increased performance over single channel mode.
The following requirements must be met for the DDR memory to function in dual channel mode:

    • Same density (256MB, 512MB, etc.)

    • Same DRAM chip technology (x8 or x16)

    • All either single-sided or dual-sided

    • Matched in both Channel A and Channel B memory channels

Compaq presario s5100nx very slow windows xp

1GB of RAM is not enough to run Windows XP and the programs you installed efficiently. Removing unnecessary programs should make more memory available for necessary programs but it will never be fast. Crucial.com is a great resource for memory upgrades but I don't think you should invest in a computer that old with a completely unsecure and unsupported operating system (XP).

I hope this helps.

768 meg is the most you can put in the 5000 ..your system only has 128 meg so 768 would be a considerable improvment .... "crucial.com" is a great company to get reliable memory and information ... here is their page on your computer

Compaq Presario 5000 won't turn on

hi,
The machine is getting the power but no display. This seems a RAM or motherboard issue.
1.Press and release NUM Lock after turning on and if it is responding this is a RAM issue and if not then the mainboard issue but before all refix the RAM once.
Thank You.

Memory upgrade

First step : Make sure the memory you purchased meets the following specifications

"168pin PC133 SDRAM DIMM" which should be easily accessible from wherever you bought it.

If not, then you can find memory here. that the company guarentee's will work with your system. Also - You want to make sure the memory that was in your system to begin with is identical to the memory you are sticking in it to get it to 512MB Systems that are this old with "PC133 SDRAM" are very picky about what kind of ram you stick in them. Make sure wherever you purchase your memory from, has a guarentee that it will work in the make/model of your computer.
