Question about Archos 605 WiFi Digital Media Player
I had the same problem. "Invalid Map Code", etc. I went to archos.com/gps_install, and followed the directions. I had to update my 605 wifi firmware. Once I did that, I entered my map code and map version (found the version on a .txt file on the dvd, forget which one), and followed the directions from there. Seems to be working so far, although I haven't actually taken it on the road yet (can't seem to get a GPS signal in my garage).
I'll post a follow-up once I know it's working.

Thanks to Hendospleen's tip, I was able to solve my problem. There was one more "gotcha" in my case.
I have a 605 wifi, and I use a laptop running Windows Vista to "talk" to it.
I bought the "Archos GPS In-Car Holder". I could not install the maps from the CD due to "Invalid Map Code". I tried submitting two problems through Archos' on-line support. That was in January and in February. One told me to upate my 605 firmware, which I did. The other told me to wait two days for a new code. Ha ha, got me. Now it is May. I tried phoning, twice, and both times was told "we'll have more codes tomorrow and will send one to you." Needless to say I'm still waiting. Got me again. And again, if you're really counting.
So I started Googleing and found this page. Bless you all.
Following the tip, I went to www.archos.com/gps_install (which I certainly never heard of from Archos!!) and started following their directions. Oh oh... at Step 2 it wants my Map Code...
I used the Map Code from the sticker on the CD.
I followed Hendospleen's advice and found the Map Version. (It was in file gps.txt on the CD.) It clearly says "mapversion_us = 2007.10". I kept getting a message that the Map Code and the Map Version were incompatible. Hmm. I almost gave up, but just for fun I tried a map version of "2008.04". And it worked!!
I was able to follow the rest of the instructions and install the maps and GPS firmware. Like the other guy, I have not taken it out on the road yet, but it does seem to work in my dining room, so I thought I had better post my experience here right away and hope it helps someone else.
Imagine, all this bother to so many other people, just because of an out-of-date gps.txt file on the CD. (My guess is they updated the maps on my CD but did not update the gps.txt file, but I could be wrong.) All Archos support has to do is put that information online some where -- like maybe on their own website -- tell people about online gps_install instead of using the CD install, and no one will have to wait for any key that isn't printed right on the CD.

Archos.com FAQ says contact Technical support which could be a long process on the phone unfortunately.
I have entered a valid map code during the installation process with the DVD but it is refused. There might be two reasons to this:
• Your map code might only be composed of 12 characters including an underlined digit/letter.
In this case, instead of typing the underlined character, enter a “&” before the character that is underlined (ex: “2C4” becomes “2&C4”).
• If your map code has 13 digits, reinstall your GPS software using the DVD.
After inserting the installation DVD, the installer does not launch automatically. What should I do?Explore the DVD with Windows Explorer and click on GPS_Installer.exe. This will automatically launch the installer.
Note: if there are no files on the DVD, please contact our Technical Support.
I cannot install the GPS software since I have the following message: “error license”.Please contact our Technical Support.
I bought the 605 GPS (as the bundle : The 605 and the GPS Accessory together). Do I have to use the installation DVD supplied with the device? No, you do not need to use the DVD as the GPS software and maps have already been installed and activated on the 605 GPS.
However, you may have to use it later to reinstall the GPS software if you have any problems with your GPS or have to format the disk of your Archos.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
