Question about HP Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Tc1100 tablet PC. The jog dial, which is used to change the backlight level works only to lower the level of the light. The jog dial will not go up. The jog dial is also used to move web pages up and down. Currently, the dial only moves the pages down. The jog dial is the only way to increase screen brightness on that computer and the jog dial will not permit an increase. I can no longer use the computer. Thank you

Thanks for your response. I have tried to change the assigments for the buttons. I've restored the system to a much earlier date without success. I changed the jog dial down to up in the hope that it would then brighten the light. Finally, I re-installed the q menu software. I have not reintalled the button driver software. I'll give that a try and let you know. Thanks.

Did you check the settings with the applet for "Tablet and buttons" (from the control panel)?
Did you install anything recently or make any other system changes?
Perhaps a rollback (system recovery) might fix the problem. This works the majority of the time.
dont give may take three or four restore attemps before you find one that works..pick a recent date from when it was working correctly and restore to then, if it doesnt work go back a few days earlier.

The drivers for the buttons would be:
Tablet PC Button Driver version 1.00 B (8 Nov 03)

All of the drivers and software add-ons are here:

Scroll down to the subheading - User Guide
Click on the appropriate Windows operating system you are using,
Windows 7, or Windows 8.

Both User Guides are PDF files.
The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
Allow the PDF file to download all the way.

Then go to the Top Left corner, and hover your mouse cursor on it.
You will see > Toggle Sidebar < will briefly appear.
Left-click on Toggle Sidebar

There will now be two icons;
Show Thumbnails on the left, and Show Document Outline on the right.......
Click on > Show Document Outline.

Scroll down the list. Click on the subheading >
Using the action keys.
(The Action keys are the F keys at the top of the Keyboard.
F1 through F12)

Here we see you hold down on the Fn key, (Bottom of Keyboard, second key from Left); and AT THE SAME TIME, tap on the F3 key. The F3 key is the Increase Brightness key.

Does not work?
Then you have a problem with the Backlight, in the LCD screen.

A primer before I go on........

An LCD screen does not produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, (Or more than one), or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses; but on a MUCH smaller scale.
Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch.
Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height.

CCFL backlighting uses a Screen Inverter.
LED backlighting GENERALLY does not use a screen Inverter.
(First models with LED backlighting seemed to use a screen Inverter. Newer models do not)

Your HP 450 Notebook PC uses LED backlighting.
Here we can see an LCD screen replacement example,

NOTE -> Backlight type: LED
It does NOT use a screen Inverter.
How do I know? I'm looking at the Service Manual right now.
(I use two monitor screens)

You can also look at the Service Manual. It's Free, and available in the Manuals download page where you started.

On the Manuals download page, scroll down to the subheading >
Service and maintenance information.
Click on the blue >
HP 450 Notebook PC and HP 455 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide (26 Apr 2013)

Page 31 - Display assembly subcomponents

The LED backlighting is built into the LCD screen.
To replace the backlight, you replace the LCD screen.
Need step by step guidance with this, please post back in a Comment.

I have an HP G62-149WM laptop. After leaving it in a hot car in the sun I used it normally for 3 hours till the battery ran out. The next day I started it up and the screen was nearly totally dark. I could...

Thats interesting as thingsdon't usually come back. It could have been the backlight power supply or even the lcd itself. The lcd can be damaged by temps under freezing or over a 100F (38C) or so.

Unfortunetly there is probably nothing to find if you got it checked out so you would just be wasting money. Most techs replace or repair on a board level so if one of the resistors or capacitors has a problem they wouldn;t be able to find it.

Basically you should just run it until it actually fails then you can get it fixed fairly easily. If it is a backlight issue (power or light) or even lcd you can just hook it up to an external monitor to use it. Thats somewhat less annoying than using the flashlight ;-]

Acer netbook AO751h screen does not work, external monitor works fine.

Hello !

Since an external monitor works, it is the display's backlight or inverter board.

If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim on you rather than a slow degradation the inverter would be indicated.

Hope this helps.

My screen will not light up on my acer. i changed

backlight is out.
If you changed the inverter and cable then the only thing left is the backlight itself.

HOWEVER, software does control this. If you disconnect the drive will you get anything different. - it will be operating on the BIOS only.

if it does reinstall the system, if not visit Best Buy

Do what you can to rule out the tablet's firmware and power-management software being dotty (by refreshing those installations.)  Just in case, put an order for a replacement backlight in (from HP, who can at least let you on to the part number, or elsewhere...) and have a flatscreen handy to use as a spare display if the internal one gives out on you!

Oh!  And file questions like this in a non-general category so you can get answers sensible to HP tablet PCs!

Gateway moniter fluorescent light seems to be burned out.How to replace it

Unplug, carefully open up whatever your model is and find out the model on the backlight and search for it on eBay or wherever; or search eBay using the Gateway model number as a guide; or decide how to better replace it with an LED module (lower power, better lifetime, etc.) and order that instead.

Hey, isn't this problem better classified as relating to your monitor, not PC Desktops?  What posessed you to call it like this?
