Question about Leica DISTO A5 Rangefinder

Leica disto classic 5a

My leica disto classic 5a cannot seem to measure over 25m outside on a good day.By good day i mean at the first attempt even when its tripod mounted.I have used a reflector of the type that ships with the Hilti pd20 but its no better. This tool was bought 2nd hand and advertised as "As New" and Vgc and measured up to 200m. The battery checker shows 3-4 bars out of 5 and its supposed to measure up to 10000 times on new batteries. On small thing is the cover of the battery holder is missing and has been replaced by a copper clip, but the unit appears to be working fine indoors in every respect allbeit that i haven't tried over 25m indoors yet. When the laser is on, I can somtimes see it 70 m away outside through the viewfinder but other times i cant see it 10 metres away using the viewfinder.
Please advise if possible

    thanks benimur

for the links to support for this item, in response to your comments, i agree that it is posssible that the laser strength may becoming weaker, only thing is that in a weak laser there is a widening of the ray and in the manual it gives the beam width over certain distances so its easy to interpolate the beam size at 10m and it seems to be bang on. The error code I keep receiving is a 255 which is that the beam is not being reflected strongly enough. Another reason i'm not totally convinced that the laser is failing is that these instruments have a built in system checker and if anything is moving out pf spec, it should throw up a 287 service fault, Having read one or two customer reviews on the Classic 5a they say that it cant get anywhere near 200m without proper leica reflector. I think what I need is a chat with someone who uses this tool on a day to day basis and compare notes.

thanks again benimur and var pun

thank you ready but i have changed the batteries and the range has increased to 35 m without a reflective target and the laser is in spec with the manual i have just measured the beam width at 10m =6mm at 50m=30mm and at 100m=60mm (outside in the dark)using plyboard as a target and if the laser was weak these dimensions would increase, im still sure the problem lies in the reflective properties of the targets used

ginko m8 i had considered the quality of the transparency of the lens but on the double check after your email i noticed a slight misalignment of the laser lens...as if had been pushed back at one corner less than 0.5 mm, possibly previous owner cleaning, this misalignment means there will be a certain amount of refraction from of the front bezel since the lens is recessed by about 3mm. Makes good sense to me. your a star m8

The optical lens of a laser rangefinder must always be kept clean for optimal performance.

The most common cause for a reduced range on this devices, is caused by dirty, or defective lens.

If the lens are dirty, on the outer or inner side, or they are opaque or defective, or there is wet inside the lens, than that is the cause for the sensibly reduced range.

Try replacing the old batteries with new batteries.
and also get your laser strength checked to the nearby repair center.most probably it is the problem of laser strength.

thanks.

Have you tried a reset? Procedures are better explained in the manual.

My leica disto A5 is not measuring more than 2.5 meters , if i measure more thank 2.5 meters it give info 255

First, insert brand new Duracell batteries. Then you might try cleaning the optics with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. A 255 error indicates that the unit is not getting a strong enough signal, essentially that not enough of the laser is getting back through the optics to the sensor. If these don't make a difference, contact the dealer you bought it from, it may be eligible for the Leica repair program. (good luck if you bought it off ebay or from an unauthorized dealer)

Have a Leica Disto basic and need to know how to change measurement from m to ft.

Press and hold the circle button down, after a few seconds it will flash 'beep on/off', dont stop holding it down, it will then cycle to 'units', press +/- to change between metric and imperial, then press the = button to store. If you keep holding it down you can set the reference pont (where the measurement is taken from, the back, middle or front edge of the machine) add an offset (add take away from the displayed dimension), and you can also reset the machine.

It depends on the model that you have. I may have some replacement screens for that device, but I need to know the exact model number. (DIsto LIte5, Classic5, Classic5A, and DIsto A5) . Leica does not sell these parts, you just need to find someone that has an old unit like yours that still has a good screen. Contact me with the model number and I can let you know if I have any.

Leica disto A3 button broke

Mike,
Leica does not sell replacement keypads, if the unit is less than 2 years old they will cover it under warranty. Contact the dealer you bought it from and they can handle the warranty exchange. If it is over two years old, it is out of warranty, but they offer a "repair" option, which will replace your damaged A3 with a new D3 for about $215. If you bought it from a reputable dealer, you shouldn't have any problem.
Hope this helps,

Disto A3 - problem acquiring readings over 3-4m

A short rectangular "dot" is normal, a 255 error indicates that you are not getting enough reflection back to the optics. This may be due to the surface you are aiming at. Try placing a piece of white paper over the surface, if it does not measure 30 or 40 meters to a sheet of white paper, indoors, and the optics are clean, I'd contact your dealer to initiate a warranty claim. 3 or 4 meters should not be a problem unless the surface is very rough, such as dirt or sand, or very dark color.
If you just bought the unit from a licensed distributor, you should have at least a two year warranty, possibly 3 years.
