You need to finalize dvd disc and then this can be playback in computer or dvd player.
When disc is completed or full with data, there is an option in camera menu to finalize it.
Need further info or help, let me know.

Hello, I connected my DCR-HC54 (minidv) to computer using USB cable (come with camcorder). latest PMB is installed on windows 7 64-bit home premium. It gives following message: Cannot find the Handycam...

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Sony call this "i.Link". Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. According to a list on the Sony site, your particular model is not one that can use USB for video transfers to computer.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other.

Sony have a help page for your camera, with tutorials and downloads, at THIS LINK

Do I need a disc to upload to get the sony handycam 610 to connect to my computer so I can see my video's

if your computer doesnt have any native drivers for your handycam then YES you need to install the software or the CD that came with your Handy cam.

however in some cases that some PC has a native driver for your handycam all you need to to is to plug the handycam to your PC and it will show you a window if you want to transfer the video/picture or open a folder.

you can try to plug in your handycam and if its not detected then you need to install the software or driver for your device

hope that helps.
