Question about Apple iMac G3 15" M5521 Desktop
As your iMac is a slot loader it's very easy to replace the battery.
Sit the mac screen side down on a folded towel or something similar, with the base of the Mac facing you. With a flat-bladed screwdriver, prise open the oval shaped panel at the top - NOT the one with the big fastener in the middle! Under that panel you will see 2 sets of screws. Remove the outer two. leave the inner two alone.
Now, where the flip-out foot fits onto the case you will see 2 more screws just inside the foots moun ting. Remove those.
Now, pull the bottom off starting at the top so that it pivots at the bottom edge. you may have to side the shole thing towards the edge of the desk first. Keep pullingh/pivoting and suddewn;y the base with come free, It might make a snapping sound but don't worry. That plastic is tough. N ow look at the beautifull aluminium emf cage. you will see two more obvious screws close to where the foot pivot was. remove those. The next bit is a little tricky if you have stubby fingers. Look around the adge of the emf cage and you will see four much smaller screws . Two near the top and two just behind the loudspeakers. You have to remove these. Be careful as it is very easy to drop them inside the mac - even for experienced service techs. One you have the svrerw out, gently prise off the emf cage. It can be trickey and it sometimes catches sao just take care.
the battery is now eay to change.
Some folks recon they can change the battery through the RAM door. - yes they can - but more often than not they break the battery holder in the process. It's much safer to do it the proper way.
Putting it back together is just the rev erse - and you'll drop those little screws again.
If you do, pick the mac up and give it a shake - they always come out again.
