The agitator in the machine won't spin back and forth and makes a noise indicating it' stripped when you add clothes. When I take the part that you add softener to out, I can see the actual connetion spinning at the bottom of the shaft. But the upper part is the part that is stripped. How can you take this apart and fix it? What kind of parts do I have to buy?
I have the agitator taken apart to the point of getting the part out the the ratchet dogs are in. I don't know how to get that out so I can either just clean them or replace them.
I have the exact same problem and the reason is clear. You can remove the semi-clear cap under the softener resevoir by pulling on one of the two earsby hand (it's snug, but will come out) to expose the dirve mechanism. It is removed by taking out the bolt (7/16" socket with extension). You'll need to hold the fins on the agitator at the bottom of the washing bowl while losening. It's a regular RH thread. You can remove the top part of the agitator now and inside is the culprit. It's a device with four ears made of plastic. The replacement assembly was about $15 and easy to install.

We have the exact same problem. Our machine is a Whirlpoos Ultimate Care II, Quiet Wash II Imperial Series. Model LSN1000KQ0. While washing it makes a rumbling noise and when spinning it does nothing but drain. If you life the lid quickly it starts to spin. We will try to get ahold of the proper kit and fix it, and will let you know how it turns out. Thanks....
I have that same model, but have a slightly different problem. Mine agitates fine, but when it should go to DRAIN/SPIN, it just stops completely. I checked the gearcase already and it does function properly by shifting to SPIN, bu the motor stops. I suspect the selector switch/timer, but hate to replace it with further diagnosis. Anybody know where to find a troubleshooting guide for these? Thanx, Phil 1-02-08

Fixed it. Turns out the lid switch was shorted out. 1-03-08

I think what you have going here is some worn agitating ears. In the appliance world we call them dog ears. You have to remove the fabric desp, it should just pop off. Under there will be a cap that you can grab with a needle nose pliers and pull the cap off. Now you will be looking at the bolt that holds the agitator to the shaft. Remove this bolt and you can get to the dog ears and plastic bearing. There is a kit for this and the part number is 3951682. This is not a hard fix...just take your time and observe.
