Question about HP Photosmart C6180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

HP 6180 keeps uninstalling itself (or rather disappearing as a printer)

At least once every couple of days, I have to reinstall the printer because it keeps "disappearing" as a printer option. The HP website is no help. Just got an error message for the first time. Said that "HP was aware of the problem" and gave me an option to click for more info. I did and it took me to HP website, but not to any additional information. Suggestions?

I also have to reinstall the driver every now and again. Unistalling and reinstalling does NOT permanently solve the problem. The bottom line is that HP make great hardware but their software is SUB STANDARD. For this reason I am reluctant to purchase HP again.

Same problem here. In addition to the printer not being available, much of the software seems to have been removed. Here is the thing, on the original Vista installation on this machine I never had this problem. It is only since wiping clean and a frsh vista install that it is removing itself. It just happened for the second time since the reinstall a couple of weeks ago. Very annoying.

With Hp Photosmart C8180 and Photosmart 3210, exact same problem and at the same time!!

  • Anonymous Jan 10, 2009

Same here. c4250 on Vista uninstalls itself/disappears.

  • mom2lea Jan 21, 2009

So far, this has been the best solution--and the longest lasting. There is one tiny glitch...if I use the "sleep" feature too many times in a row, the printer gets touchy and everything in the queue goes to "error" and won't print. The good news is that I just have to "restart" and all is well without having to do anything else.

Thank you to those who take the time to post...I know it is frustrating re-living the issues, but it does help others with same problem.

I tried to install the C6180 on a new Windows Vista 64bit system. I downloaded the printer driver from the HP web
site. The PC printer disappears every so often after a reboot or when the system comes back from sleep mode.
The recommended "Critical update to prevent
unexpected printer uninstall" does not install on my system.

Message when trying to install CIT223969-HPCOM-Baloo64-v4:
    "This update does
not support any of the HP device drivers that you have on your PC. You do not
    need this software update."

    hp disappears on vista

  • Anonymous May 11, 2009

I have a similar problem with a 6310 printer. I don't know if this is a workaround, but if you are running Vista 64 bit, when it disappears, go to Control Panel, Printers, Add new printer, and see if your printer appears in the list. If it does, choose install. All of the drivers are already on your OS. It reinstalled on my system in about 1 minute. Of course, it disappeared later, but I did this "quick" reinstall again and it worked again (briefly). I will be installing XP on my new computer ASAP. I can't believe Microsoft is forcing this bogus OS on us. They know it has major problems, and even they can't fix it. Google the problem, and you just get hordes of people with the same problem. No solutions!! Unbelievable!!

If that is a software driver problem, you have to get the latest driver from hp website.
You can also uninstall the printer yourself and do a clean reinstallation of the printer.

I have a laptop with Vista 32bit and an HP 2700 photosmart that is wireless and the printer disappears. I put the install disk and let it find the printer on my network. This is a Vista problem because I have two other computer with XP on them and no problems at all.

I just found this solution on another forum. Not sure if it is a permanent fix, but it's a quick fix and sure beats having to uninstall and reinstall printer. Since I am connected by wireless, I followed the directions and when it said it couldn't locate my printer I entered the IP address for printer and it magically appeared again and is working.

I have copied and pasted the info I found. Good Luck!

Here's the fix:
1. In Control Panel, Printers, delete offline printers. If they wont
delete, it may be because there are pending print jobs in the queue. Open the
printer and Cancel the jobs.
2. In Printer properties, Ports tab, delete the previoulsy installed
printers (offline statuts) that appear as Client Side Rendering Provider
under the Description column. To do this, highlight the port, then click on
Delete Port button. Click Apply.
3. Restart your PC.
4. Now reinstall the printers as follows:
5. Open Control panel, Printers, and click Add a printer.
6. Click Add a local printer.
7. Select the "Use an existing port" radio button, and select LPT1: (Printer
Port). Click Next.
8. Install the printer driver. Mine were found in the list inlcuded with
Vista. Select the manufacturer and the printer. Click Next.
9. In the next window, accept the printer name or type in a new name. Leave
the "Set as default printer" box unchecked. Click Next.
10. Vista should now install the printer. A window should open saying
"You've successfully added printer name.
11. DO NOT Print a test page at this time, because nothing is connected to
the LPT1 port on the laptop. Just press Finish. The printer you just added
should appear in the Printers window.
12. Click ONCE on the newly added printer to highlight it, then right-click
and open Properties.
13. On the Ports tab, click Add Port…, select Local Port, then click New Port…
14. When the Port Name window open, Enter a port name as follows:
\\computername\printername
(replace computername with the name of your PC acting as print server, and
printername with the name of your printer). Click OK.
15. You should now have a new port listed on the Ports tab of the printer
Properties, but now the Description should be Local Port, instead of Client
Side Rendering Provider. Click OK.
16. Now you can go to the General tab, and Print a Test Page.

Hopefully, your test page will print. Then restart your computer to check
that the printer comes back online.

This procedure worked for me. Hope it works for you too. Good luck!

Are you using genuine or knock off inks?
Take out the blabk cartridge and knock in onto your hand while using a paper towel to absorb ink.
If ink comes out you have a communuication problen with the printer ink carriage or a defective cartridge.

I've seen this a few times with Vista but each time it seems to be something different. The first thing to be done is make sure you have all the current Vista updates and including SP1. Once that is done I would completely uninstall the HP software. Then download the latest version of software from HP and install. Vista has alot of qwerks that sometimes defy answers.

Windows keeps re-installing HP Photosmart C4280

I have a customer with Windows XP and the same issue. Told him to unplug the printer cable when starting the computer and/or restarting it. Wait until all auto-start programs have loaded, including and specifically the HP Monitoring Utility program. Once Windows is up and he's at the desktop, THEN plug the printer cable into the computer. He's been doing that for several days now with no duplicate printers installed.
