Question about JVC GR-DX97 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

JVC GR-DX97 Zoom Control Button on top

I have this strance problem with the zoom control on the top of the camera (JVC GR-DX97). At times the camera automatically zooms to the max limit without me touching /sliding the button. The only way I can bring it back to wide angle view is to keep slide the button to the left and keep it pressed. It is a great camera and I hope that this issue can be resolved somehow. Is there a part number to be replaced. If so where can I get it. Also, I have tried to look for a parts diagram but have not been able to find it.

Thank you,

No there is no "Auto Zoom" or such option in the menu. I have also reset the camera from within the menu function. Now it doesn't do it all the time. Seems like it has a mind of its own. The Zoom option has a setting of 12X, 40X, and 700X. The default is 40X but I have set it to 12X so that it does not go to 40X or further. Thank you for all your assistance in advance.

Thank you for your reply. Is there a way to get this part and repair the unit myself? If so, where can I purchase this part and what is the part called? Will the part need to be replaced indefinitely or can it be somehow cleaned? Is there a way to download a service manual for free somewhere? Or it is better to give it to an authorized service center? Any idea on the repair cost?

Thank you once more for all your assistance.

You have a bad zoom unit/zoom controller. It is common on these units.

Turn on the unit and goes to full zoom. Back it off manually, it will immediately return to full zoom. Unit was bought new about 6 years ago.

My camera did the turned out to be a sticking zoom switch. With the camera turned OFF... move the zoom button ON TOP ( above the view finder) of the camera to the left and right about 20 or 30 times... then turn the camera on and try it.... very simple... but it worked for me :o)

JVC GR-DF470AA continually zooms in automatically even when not pressing zoom. Its like the zoom button is stuck on zoom. To stop the zoom I have to press the zoom out.

This sounds like a physical problem with the switch, but you will have to disassemble it to see what's going on. There are videos on utube that demonstrate the process, if you elect to try that. If you elect to have it serviced, get an estimate first, as they can be fairly expensive to fix. Wish I had better news.

Zoom problem

I have the same problem. I hoped it was down to the zoom button on the top of the camera. I dismantled it and eventually got to the button but couldn't find anything loose/damaged or needing cleaned.

Did you ever find a solution?

Can I manually control the zoom and focus?

Yes. Zoom can be controlled either by a variable speed rocker control, or a zoom ring on the lens. Focus is either automatic or manual via a focus ring.
