How do I connect my flat screen tv to my Phillips MX3900 system

This is an older home theater package and only has component video out for HD and RCA or SPDIF optical out for audio. You'll need to locate the component video input on the back of your flat panel and connect it to the component output of the Phillips unit. Component cables have 3 RCA cable (Red, Blue, Green) for HD. You can use a RED/WHITE RCA cable for audio but if you have a SPDIF Optical cable you should use that for better sound. The TV should have that as an input also. You will need to go into the Menu for the TV and select component video and SPDIF optical if you went that route for audio.

I want to get a mono audio output from the TV audio sockets to combine the L&R channels to a magnetic loop amplifier. At present I only use the R channel) I want to keep the main sound as-is so that...

I assume you are taking an output from either the "Phono" or "Cinch" sockets on the TV.
There are leads available that combine left and right channels to one output. All you do is buy a Phone lead with the correct plugs on it. The lead will be a stereo lead. Cut the cable and join the screen/braided outer wired together. Connect the TV stereo inners together and you have a mono output. The TV has a buffer to ensure no damage is done to the sockets. If you want you can use a pair of 10k resistors in a "Y" configuration but as it is not a balanced amplifier input, it really doesn't matter.
Just use one of the plugs for your Induction Amplifier and you will get a mono signal on your loop that contains all of the audio information.
Hope that helps.

I have a Phillips flat screen tv that says locked when I turn it on. It won't let me do anything with the remote or on the buttons. I tried power cycling, but that didn't help.

if you connect the dvd to the tv using scart 2 on the tv it should send sound back to the dvd. if not then one of the scarts should be marked with a 2way arrow showing that is both input and output.
failing that us e phono cables (red/white) from audio out on the tv to audio in on the dvd and select the av or au on the dvd remote.

Mono to stereo

You can't convert mono to stereo since the TV only has a single input, and not the separate right and left channel circuits needed for stereo. If you are connecting a stereo source like a DVD player, what you can do is combine the right and left channels into one and connect that to the mono input. You need an audio Y-adapter with two RCA jacks going into a single RCA plug. These are available from Radio Shack. If you are outside the US, there should be local sources such as a stereo shop where you can find the adapter. This won't give you stereo, obviously, but you will have all the sound.
